    Computer won't power up

    Hi
I'm having a problem with my computer powering up.
A few months ago the psu failed so I put in a new one (450w) and all was ok. I noticed that the wiring to the +12v 4 pin connector had gone a bit brown at the connector end presumably overheating but as I said the pc ran fine.
Yesterday my son went to use the computer and said it wasn't running even after switching off at the mains and back on again (pc is usually left on 24hrs a day). I opened it up and thought psu again. Tried a psu from another working pc but no difference. I noticed that the led on the board near the memory slots turned on when the start button on the front of the case was pressed but the cpu fan and psu fan would not run.
I took off the +12v 4 pin connector and pressed the start button, the psu and the cpu fans ran for about 0.5 secs. When I released the start button and pressed it again the fans did the same thing. The led also lit for the same time. On reconnecting the +12v 4 pin connector and pressing the start button the fans would not run but the led stayed on as before.
I'm thinking motherboard can anyone confirm this please.

    GIGABYTE GA-8IK1100 MOTHERBOARD
    P4 2.8 prescott
    1 GB ram
    450w psu

It seems like the motherboard main connector is dead.

    Hello Malc,

It's a new motherboard I'm afraid, hopefuly your cpu is ok.

Might I also suggest you add a couple of extra case fans and an exhaust.

Thanks for the replies, I'll get a new mb tomorrow and let you know what happens.
Where do I connect extra fans to?

    Hello Malc,

Do you mean position or power?

Position, depending on case but in most circumstances, front or top and one attatched to the side of the case facing towards cpu, this one should be larger of the two.

Power is simple, when you buy your fans make sure they come with pigy back adapters.

Once you have fitted your fans, pull one of the white plugs off one of your drives, fit the white plug from the fan to the drive and the plug from the drive to the the fan adapter, you'll work it out, do one fan at a time and its the same procedure for the other fan.

For an exhaust, remove a cover from back of PC as if fitting a card, as high as you can get it, install fan, power comes off another drive same way as fans or the PSU, or MB.

You can get an exhaust or fan that will fit directly in to a front drive bay, choice is yours.

Cables are not alwasy long enough on some fans so be wary of that, make sure they don't block air flow to CPU so cable tie..

Lastly, by adding fans you will increase PC noise levels, I am writing this on a PC I have fitted three extra fans to and an exhaust, the unit is 2 feet away at my feet and the noise is unobstusive, what it would be like if it was on my desk, I don't know, but there are super sillent fans out there but the cost goes up.

Fitted new motherboard and everythings ok at the moment. I didn't realise that there was a fan connector on the mb for fitting extra fans. I will be fitting the fans shortly. Thanks for all your help.
