    Startup problem

I have a very peculiar problem with my PC.

on start up it will not post or boot and makes a funny sheesh-ing noise. To make it boot i have to open up the case and wiggle the heatsink on the processor. it will then boot first time.

I have installed a 3rd heatsink an arctic cooler 7 so i dont think it is a heatsink problem.

I have been told it may be a powersupply issue but i dont really want to spend another £80 on a new power supply if it isnt.

    Any ideas?

    Hello BC,
I don't think it's your power supply, I do however think it's your CPU, remove it, check to make sure of no bent pins, remove old thermal paste, throughly clean, apply new paste or tape, boot up, check heat sink fan is working, see what happens, post back.

All done, still same problem after couple of start-ups.

This is a weird one. Have a few mates who are very good with pcs and they havent got a clue.

    Hello BC,

Hmm, are you able to lay your hands on another CPU, install it and see if the same problem occurs?

Or install your CPU into another PC and again see what happens.

I still belive it to be a faulty CPU.

The next most likely culprit is a faulty mobo and then in your case a faulty PSU.

Get hold of a cheepo PSU, install it see if the same problem, what make of PSU do you have now, what it's output.
