Exclamation Computer will not start up

    Hi all -

I am having issues with another computer in my household. It was having keyboard issues, so I ran antivirus software, and ad killing software. After running these, there were still problems with it, so I opened it and took out a hard drive that I had installed myself in it (I know that doesn't make any sense, but that's what I did). Then I tried to turn it on...aggghh...major problems occured. First of all it's an eMachines and it has the little green light around the power button to let you know it's on...well that never came on. And the hard drive light came on for a bit, i don't know if i actually heard it spinning or not. I don't believe it's a power supply fault, because the cpu fan started up. I don't want it to be a hard drive issue, but that's what i'm guessing right now.

When I took the other hard drive out, the IDE cable came apart, so I tried to put it back together. But this problem (of not starting up) occured before I even touched the hard drive. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Any questions, ask, and I will try to answer them the best i can. thanks!

have you another IDE cable to try?

if you try starting without a hard drive what happens?

I just now tried it with no Hard Drive plugged in. I get the same thing as before. it must be a motherboard problem. I hooked that had drive up to the computer I am using right now, and to the other computer with a different IDE cable. It worked fine when I had it installed in this computer, but in the other with the other IDE cable same as before.

is my diagnosis correct about being a MB issue?

    Thanks again!

I was pretty careful with ESD while I had the case open. There were no beeps or anything. The CD and DVD drive lights lit up, the HD light was one for a few secs, and my wireless card's power led came on.

no beeps doesn't sound very good.

if all the bits work in another PC it well be a motherboard issue.

you say the fan on yhe CPU spins, is the fan power conected to the motherbard

    Hello Rewclaus,

Going by your discription It's your main board that had it, your drives sound OK.

You'll need a new mother board, posibly a CPU, hopefully your memory will fit and lastly even if it's working replace you PSU.

What make of PC do you have, post the details.
