Bios HDD detection

Bios HDD detection
Hi guys, this is my first post
normally I don't need help with my pc, but this is quite an annoying problem and is also a matter of <<DATA LOSS!>>
right, i fried my motherboard the other day (don't ask how
) and when i put the new one in, which is quite similar, it couldn't pick up my 80gb hdd. yes, i have checked all the jumpers, but if i put this hdd in on it's own, then whichever cable/jumper it's on always freezes the bios. i can only get onto the hdd in Linux, which somehow detects it, but can only read off it (all my data is still going strong!). i don't particularly want to wait until i get my new pc to be able to get onto it in windows!
any advice? (feel free to email, i might forget to check this post!)

You say BIOS detection and yet you say that Linux sees it? But not Windows?
Meaning the BIOS sees it? Yes?
If you had XP on that hard drive it would have to be reinstalled.

sorry, should have been more clear.
linux can detect it using the installation cd
bios CANNOT detect it, but it crashes when it tries, i have to skip it

right, problem over, i just told bios not to detect that hdd, to stop it hanging. windoze detects it fine now, thanks anyway.
