Recovery CD Rom will not start, advice please

Hello, new poster here. I have a Toshiba Satellite Laptop 2610/2650 from a government agency. This computer was completely drained of all information. Absolutely nothing on it. I do have the Product Recovery CD Rom though. When I turn on the computer, it tells me to insert the CD Rom and press any key to continue. When I do that, I only get the message "insert system disk in drive and press any key to continue". No matter what I do, it continues to say the same thing. Can anyone offer any advice please and thanks in advance, Eric

Hi there, it sounds like "insert system disk" message is referring to the floppy drive. Some PC's can boot directly from the CD-ROM drive but if you have the Recovery CD in the drive and it's not recognising it, it means that either your PC won't do it or you have to alter the boot procedure to include the CD-ROM drive. This can be done by entering your BIOS (usually the DEL key) and manually changing it.
The easier way is to get hold of a Windows 98 start-up disk (floppy) and insert it before you power the PC on. This will load generic CD-ROM drivers onto your PC so it can read the Recovery CD. It will then give you a DOS prompt were you can type:

    D:SETUP or E:SETUP

Which should execute the recovery / re-installation procedure.

    Hope this helps.

i have the same problem. although i get a "checking boot cd-rom " message.
the drive light comes on and then the message "no bootable cd in atapi cd-rom"
"non system disk - insert boot disk and press a key"
i have tried windows xp disk, recovery disk and a p.c recovery disc that cost me $20, nothing works, same every time.
memory checks out fine, hdd is fine but empty. i have not got a floppy drive on my laptop!

the answer is probably simple. finding the question takes more wisdom than i have!!!

i used another computer to format and partition the hard drive, then performed a fresh installation of windows.
so, i lost all programs that were not backed up, but got my laptop back.

    hope you cure yours.
