    Computer Turns Off By Itself

    Hi everyone,

In the past couple of months, while I am on the computer, the computer will all of a sudden turn off by itself.

This usually happens when Im running a spyware program like SpyBot or Windows Defender. I don't know why is would do this. I have both programs to run thorough checks on my computer for spyware and for example, I would be running Spybot by itself and when it is done half way through, the computer turns off.

I wish I knew what was wrong with it. I have a Dell Dimension 2350 Computer, it is about 4 years old.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Also, the computer would not only turn off when I have the Spyware programs run, it would also turn off when it is idle for about a half hour.

By "turn off", do you mean actually power down or just restart? If your computer is just powering down by itself, make sure it's not set to do so after a specific amount of time idling. Also, what is your power supply make and how old is it? Does it turn off anywhere or just idling and scanning for spyware?

If it is restarting, go into Control Panel -> System -> Advanced, and click on the error processing options. Make sure "automatically restart" is checked off and wait for the next time it crashes. You may be able to get a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD).

If that happens, post it here and you'll get plenty of help.

PS. I love your avatar! The Angel of Darkness was a great game and who can resist Lara Croft?

Hi, thanks for the complement I have all of the Tomb Raider games, she's awesome lol.

We'll back to the topic, the computer actually powers off by itself. It doesnt restart, it just stays off until I power button it back on.

I will check to see that its not suppose to turn off at a certain time. Will let you know if thats the case. Thanks alot

Some places to check for errors:

Look in your Event viewer: rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
Or: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or Start/Run/ eventvwr
Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for X errors. Click error line for details.
Post back the source & event id & Description especially of errors that seem to coincide with this issue.
Also check the Information lines that might coincide with this issue.

How to view and manage event logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

Also view your Error Log via:

    [1] Start Menu
    [2] Help and Support
    [3] Pick a Task
    [4] Tools
    [5] Advanced System Information
    [6] View the Error Log

    Look for any synchronous entries.

Also Dell has a Scan that might show something:

It might be best to run a HijackThis log by our Pros in that section just to clear this as a malware/virus issue. If they give you an all clear please return to this thread and we can take it from there.

Please follow the instructions HERE & then post your log in a new thread in the Spyware, Adware, Viruses and HijackThis Logs section.
    (Not in this section please).

Please specify what issues you appear to be experiencing along with your log.

You also might still want to run that Dell Scan.

    Hi, thanks for the info.

I checked my computer inside and found out that there was something loose! It was the metal box that heats up next to the fan. (I forgot the name) lol.

So I and went ahead and made sure that everything was put in place, and I cleaned it up real good. Dusted and everything. Carefully of course Now all seems ok.

I also ran anti-virus and spyware thoroughly and all was good. I also did a registry cleaning scan, that helped alot as well.

    Thanks again for your help
