    Laptop boot, screen stays blank

I have an older Compaq nx9010 laptop. It used to work great, but now the screen attempts to turn on and it flashes for a second and then goes black. I know the computer is working because you can faintly see the image in the background. The laptop doesnt seem to be lighting for some reason or another. I have tried to boot in safe mode and everything, but stilll the problem persists. Is there anything I can do?

Is there an exterior monitor port? If so try another monitor.

HP Notebook PCs - Display is Dim During or After Startup or Boot
    Description
During the startup or boot process of the Notebook, the display is very dim and barely readable. It remains dim when it reaches the Windows desktop.

    Solution
Perform the following steps to determine if the dim display is due to a hardware failure:

Power down the notebook PC by pressing and holding the Power button for 5 seconds.
Press the Power button again to start the computer.

If the display is still dim, the backlight is damaged. Please Contact HP to schedule a repair.

When I try to reboot it lights up through the windows boot up, and this time its staying lit a lot longer than it has recently. It booted all the way to the desktop this time; the farthest I've seen in boot in many attempts. It is working fine now, WEIRD. That is very weird, the same night I register and post a thread on DAL, the computer compter works fine????? Well, I'll post again if the problem reoccures.

I just got a compaq laptop off a friend that said it was broken...and I have a very similar problem.

I have a seperate moniter hooked up to it right now and it works great, but I'd like to use the laptop to its full potential and stop using it like a desktop.

Most of the time the laptop screen shows the Compaq logo nicely for about 2 sec. then it turns black completely, no picture visible at all on the screen. But once in a while it will reach the windows loading screen.

Does anyone know how this can be fixed??

    Thx for the help,

    -rob G

    Sounds like a backlight problem:

Hey, so my problem turned out not to be the inverter but the actual backlight.
So this means....I have a spare inverter that I'd like to get rid of.

So for anyone else that comes across this problem

If your monitor lights up for only a couple seconds then turns blank "dim" it means that the backlight is messed up...and needs to be replaced.

And if you start up the computer and it doesn't light up and all and stays black, blank, dim, w/e, all you need is an new inverter.

So once again...If your having this problem with a Compaq Evo n1020v (i think this inverter will work with other compaqs too) I have an inverter for you right here, just e-mail me at ttrancee1024@gmail.com and we can work something out.
