HELP NEEDED - emachines 220 not starting up
emachines 220 2.6ghz Celeron, 1gb Ram, 128mb PCI NVidia Graphics Card, 2x80gb HDs.
Last night I was running Norton Antivirus and left it overnight (done this on many ocassions), and was woken up by the machine making some funny noises - kind of like it was backfiring. I went to the machine and it had turned itself off, but the power indicator light was orange (stand-by I think) but could not get it out of standby mode so I rebooted.
When the machine had started all seemed normall except the keyboard lights were flashing constantly and keyboard and mouse were non-responsive. I powered down, unplugged and re-plugged everything a couple of times to make sure connections were ok. When I plugged the power lead in, the orange standby light came on, along with the hard drives spinning plus the hard drive activity indicator light flashing (at this point I had not switched the computer on, meerly just plugged it in).
I have tried to press the power switch but nothing happens.
I have now left the machine unplugged.
Can anyone help?

can you boot up your computer at all? is the screen just black with the orrange standby light on?
try booting up (or plugging in) your computer with the win xp recovery cd (if you have one) also make sure there is no floppy disk in the floppy drive.
to be honest, this sounds more like a hardware problem than a software problem but i may be wrong
Hope this helps,
Mike

also have you added any new hardware/software recently?

No - no new software or hardware recently.
Trouble is I cant actually get the machine to start up - orange standby light is on with hard drives spinning without pushing power button!!

I can't find that model at eMachines
http://www.emachines.com/support/pro...s&subcat=Other
The BIOS may be set to restart after a power failure may be why it starts automatically (or tries to).
Are you familiar with opening the case? I would first off try to clear your CMOS which involves removing the motherboard battery and also shorting the CMOS jumper (if present).
If you can ID your model at the eMachine site we could try to get more details on the procedure.

Hi just wondered if you managed to resolve your problem, I've exactly the same symptoms with an emachine 420.
