Exclamation "Removable Drive" unavailable for Edit>xx to folder...

I have a 4-month old XP Home system (Dell Dimension desktop) with USB 2.0 ports.
I am looking forward to being able to keep my 'current' projects on flashdrives which I can take to multiple sites to work on, and sync them with this 'home base' [I believe I will be able to use the Briefcase protocol, but I'm not up to that yet - doing it based on 39 years experience first will give me the confidence I am in control before I consider being dependent on Micro$oft!].

So I have old work, and I have material downloaded from original sources, which I want to move into appropriate folders - I could be organized some day! The Edit>Move to folder... command is a primary part of this plan, as it moves files from one place to another MAINTAINING THE DATE INFORMATION, which [occasionally] is significant in keeping track of what I or others have been doing. The Edit>Copy to folder... command is also very good, though it is missing that feature.

They each make use of the Save as... dialog which allows browsing through the system directory structure very nicely, without having to actually OPEN all those folders, much less close them later. It also seems to 'remember' the last destination, offering that as the first option on your next operation. [It may even keep a separate 'last destination' for different classes of file, e.g. documents, images, spreadsheets. I'm not sure.]

Problem: My USB thumb drives / flash drives / memory sticks do NOT show up on the browsing menu. My USB external Hard Drive DOES show up, so I can do my archiving and backups. But the "Removable drive" only shows up in My Computer, making the advantages of the Edit commands moot.

Am I doing something wrong? Is Micro$oft? How about SanDisk or Buffalo (the two brands I have used so far)?

Right click the drive under My Computer then choose Open.

    Does this not work?

NO, that does not work for the Edit>Move function.
Yes, that works for an independent, 'manual' access function, but the question/problem, as described in my (verbose) post has to do with the Edit>Move and Edit>Copy functions.

Get-arounds are VERY good to know, but actual fixes would be and are nicer.

I can't find any reference to that problem in the Microsoft KnowledgeBase. Are you running Service Pack 2? Even though I can't find a "known issue" for it, it may be worth getting the latest updates anyway to see if that cures it.
