-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am new here so firstly hi to all,
After reinsalling a fresh copy of XP, i decided to buy a new dvd./cd writer, i had no problems up to this stage but when i tried to install the new burner all the troubles started.
I should mention that i did the installion with a new SATA hardrive, but still everything was good.
But as soon as i tried to install the new dvd, my cdrom icon disappeared in my computor, device manager & in BIOS to.
At the time of purchase i asked the guy were the installation disc was, he said " you don't need one, windows will install it, so i took that as gospil, but the trouble i have had is unbelievable.
I also tried to reinstall the older dvd player but same deal.
I tried to use another good hardive, to format and start again,hoping that the dvd will show up and work again, no way, BIOS will not see any other hardrive except the new SATA, and no cdrom of course.
Looking in the " device manager it doesn't look right.this how it looks.
firstly d/click on IDE/ATA controllers
Intel[r]82801 EB Ultra Storage controllers [no device usage]
repeat :::: ::::::: :: :::::::::::::::::::::::::::{ enabled usage ]
Primary ide channel [ enabled ]
Secondary ide channel [ enabled ]
repeat :::::::::::::::::::::::::[ enabled ]
Standard IDE/ ESDI Hard disk controller [ no device usage ]
all of these are suppose to be working properly
Any advise would be really appreciated, thank you.
So your Hard Drive is SATA and working fine? Do you have other Hard Drives installed?
If so how are they configured?
How are the DVD/CD configured? Are the jumpers set properly?
I would suggest using the Primary IDE channel > put the new drive as Master and the old as slave.
Or set both to Cable Select.
XP does use its' own drivers for disk drives. None others are required.
Thanks for the reply,
The SATA drive is new, no other slaves off the primary.
Jacks - the SATA h/drive is set to master and pluged into the primary sata connection, and the dvd is set to master but pluged into secondary IDE .
In the IDE configuration, It gives a choice of;
Onboard PCI IDE operate mode -compatable for older than XP os, and ehanced mode for XP OS.
I choose Enhanced
then it goes to IDE Port Settings, choice of Primary P-ATA & S-ATA
Secondary P-ATA & S-ATA
P-ATA only.
Could you please advise which setting is correct.
thanks
A SATA drive works off of a single channel distinct from ATA channels.
Just to verify the cables are quite distinguishable as seen here:

ATA/IDE on left: SATA on right.
Can you verify that you do have a SATA hard drive from that cable image?
Also what is the make and model of the motherboard?
Yes, the red small cable is hooked up to SATA no 1 position, and i have a ASUS P4P800S-X Motherboard.Originally Posted by jephree
The dvd is hooked up to the IDE no 2 on the m/board, and the jack is one master position, i have tried the dvd jack on "cable select" but the pc will not even start up in that position.
Try the DVD on the Primary channel IDE #1. Set the jumpers to Master and verify that the Blue connector is in the motherboard and the DVD is plugged into the Black.
Disconnect all other drives just to test this (other than SATA).
You may also need to check your Boot Menu in the BIOS.
Often the mixture of SATA and ATA drives will confuse the BIOS.
I will look up your motherboard as soon as I can.
I put the dvd cable in Primary [IDE no 1 slot] disconnected floppy, left SATA as is, rebooted, then post showed that " master primary was ATAPI incompatable "Originally Posted by jephree

It might help if we could verify the exact process we are going thru. Not that you haven't mentioned everything but I am just trying to grasp all the steps you have taken.
1. Is this a new computer that you are building? Or did it work OK previously?
2. You just added a SATA drive and installed a Clean version of XP?
3. Since then your DVD/CD or IDE/ATA drives are not being detected?
Is this a correct summary? Sorry again for my confusion![]()
