Red face usb port won't work?

Out of the blue my usb ports are not working. I always plug in my mp3 player to get new music and plug in my kodak easyshare to transfer pictures. Now I plug them in and nothing happens. When I plug in the mp3 player my windows media player says it doesn't detect any device. When I tried my camera it doesn't do anything and it usually pops up and asks me what I want to transfer. Can someone please help me?

Right-click on My Computer and select Properties from the menu. Select the Hardware tab and click the Device Manager button (or just click on the Device Manager tab if it's Windows 98). Delete all of the entries in the 'Universal Serial Bus controllers' section. Then reboot the PC. Windows should re-detect the USB controllers and ports when the PC restarts. If Windows doesn't detect and install them again, then you have a hardware fault. In this case, you can probably resolve it by buying a 4-port USB card that plugs into a spare PCI slot inside your PC.

Let us know if that helps

I have several items under the usb in my device manager. Do I have to uninstall each one individually? I started to and it caused my keyboard and mouse not to work and I couldn't log in. Can you give me a better step by step instructions. I do not know which ones to do or in what order. I have 4 items that say usb root hub. 2 usb composite devices, a usb 2.0 root hub, a via usb 2.0 enhanced host controller, and 4 via rev 5 or later usb universal host controller. Thanks soooo much for replying and your help.

Ah. Sorry, I hadn't considered that you might have a USB keyboard and mouse

I can't think of any way to actually distinguish which USB ports they are using. Anyone else have any ideas?

Ok. I got another keyboard and uninstalled all of the items under usb in my device manager. When I logged back on they all reinstalled themselves as my computer recognized new hardware. There was one problem though. The one item listed as universal serial bus controllers has an explanation point by it. I tried to reinstall it and it says it's possible that the inf was written for windows 95 or later to contact the manufacturer. Now what??? Do usb ports just go bad all of a sudden? You have been a great help so far I am going to keep your number that's for sure. My home email is thedays@fuse.net if you would like to email my home. Thanks again..

Hmmmm. Do you know what version of Windows your PC is running? (It tells you on the side of the Start Menu).
