Try going into the Device Manager: Start/Run/ devmgmt.msc

Expand (+) DVD/CD drives and then right click the Drive in question and choose Uninstall.

Reboot the computer and XP will reinstall the drive and drivers. See if this fixes it.

Can you still write to high speed disks?

I don't know, I don't have any more of them.

My guess would be that if the drive works OK with high speed disks and not low speed then the drive does not support those low speed disks.

My guess is maybe my batch is bad. Not supporting low speed in a high speed drive is just weird.

Ok, I tried the high speed disks. No Joy. I got a another drive and the old disks I tried in the broken drive are dead! Even in the new working drive.

P.S. The other drive was from a broken computer.
