Hallo .
I have a carillion external hard disk that my PC fails to show in "my computer" window. It used to come up as " Disk H " but it's been a few days just won't show anymore. When i switch it on, the computer shows (trough the little green arrow on the bottom of the screen) that a new device has been added (calling it St 380011 A USB Device), but i can't access it because i can't find it anywhere in my Pc.
I used to have the same problem when i'd forget to connect the power adaptor. can it be that rather than the actual hard disk, the power adaptor is not working properly?
As i have important data that i now need I'm trying to find a solution to the problem. I'd appreciate any clues.
Thanks

Remove the connection and the power adapter and reboot the computer without either.
After another shutdown try to reconnect both.
Look under Disk Management: Start/Run/ diskmgmt.msc
As a worse case scenario you can always move the drive to another computer in order to extract the data.

hi and thanks for your answer.
i tried to do as you said but no luck....
when connected via usb, it does show up in disk management. that's a sign that my pc can actually detect it...but it label is now as "unallocated"...
i have been suggested to assign it another letter but when i right click on it, it doesn't give me the option to change the letter...
all i get is "new partition" then "properties" and "help".
my other pc won't find it either.....
what should i do?
thank again
If this is a new drive it needs to be partitioned/formatted before My Computer will detect/use it.
it's not a new drive. i've had it for 2 years and one day simply disappeared from the system. i have data on it. and would need to retreive it asap.Originally Posted by jephree

Is this similar to your drive:

The actual drive is a ATA/100 Seagate Barracuda
Perhaps you can run the diagnostic on it:

Do you get the exact same behavior on different computers?
Do you have another AC adapter to try? Also perhaps a different USB cable?
hi.
yep is the same drive.
mine is 80 GB
i get the same behavior on different PCs
how do i run the diagnostic??
cheers

Note: "The software you are about to download runs in Windows and creates a bootable diagnostic floppy diskette. You only run the program in Windows once."
You will have to fill out a little form with your e-mail but I think it is worth it to test this drive.
I have never used this version but the instructions should be included in the download. Perhaps a read-me file.
Basically you will find a boot floppy creator to create a boot floppy. After created just boot the floppy.
Let us know if you need further clarification.
hi.
i downloaded two files from the link you sent me.
one is a boot disk and i used it to create the diskette.
the other one is a ISO file....called SEATOOLD_EN.ISO
what should i do with the other one?
thanks
