yes it fails always at the same time. i have tried to partition a1 giga. now it shows 1 giga as Allocated and the rest as unallocated.
i have norton system tools and it's got some sort of "un format" tool. that should allow one to un format and accidentally formatted disk.
if i format the disk and have it back on "my computer" will i be able to retrieve the data via the norton un format tool?

I can find no info on the Norton tool. However there are many tools out there. A few free. Most not.

Also most tools inform you that they may not work on faulty hard drives. They are basically designed to recover from user error not hardware error. Unfortunately I am getting the suspicion that your hard drive is failing.
