24kbps and no more
The two house computers get 45kbps but visitors 'puter gets 24kbps we've swopped modems both ways but the visitor can only get 24kbps. We've tried the obvious like changing com ports all points are set to 115000 but no joy. Any ideas?
Thanks

Is this an old computer? Perhaps with an onboard modem? Perhaps a very limited onboard modem?

Re 24kbps on visitors computer. I mentioned that we had swapped modems from our house computers that were able to achieve 45kbps. I had also tried five other modems with appropriate drivers, the drivers for the visitors modem were also updated from Intels own site. I suspect that the bios conflicts with the PCI southbridge drivers but as the board's bios is dated 14.10.2005 I assume an update is not yet available. I should go for an external modem to obviate the above but cash is not in abundance.
Any ideas would be welcomed.
Thanks

Sorry for my confusion
I was just thinking that perhaps it was an old computer with an onboard modem.
Perhaps some of our more savvy hardware members will have an ides here.

Hi Jephree, thanks for responding, and the good attitude. Hopfully the Problem will sort out eventually. One way would be to use an external modem, that would bypass the pci potential. Incidently it's a new build, 3g Intel going via 1g ddr to 240g raided hdds

With a system like that it would appear that something is confused besides me
Being only used to ethernet connections and not finding anything in my searches I don't have much to add here.
This site has some good tests and utilities but again I don't know if they will help your situation any:

Penpolion, Jephree, I will add only this from my own experience:
I have an Inspiron Laptop with a built in modem that went from 31.2 connects to 24, to 19, to 12. I replaced it with a PC Card modem, it couldnt get better than 19. Replaced it with an external USB, it couldnt get better than 24.
When I cracked open my case I found that the chipset was being cooked by a failed fan. Its now not connecting at all. It would be nice to know what the difference between your system that is connecting at 45 and your friends system that only gets 24 (MB or Chipset) since even updated drivers and bios can not guarantee that the silicon is not degraded...

The system is all brand new componant parts but hey what does that say? Componant incompatability, sun/planet oppositions, piles anything can (looking for polite expressin) mess up (that was difficult) ;0)
Probably Murphy anyway!

Hi AphJN, first thing I do when I get a repair in is take it into the garage and blast it through with an airline. I've seen CPU fans sitting in bowls of felt (hate to think what the felt is made of). I'm amazed that these 'puters are still hanging there.
Best wishes
