Installing a second hard drive to my Compaq 5000

I am trying to install a second hard drive to my compaq 5000. I have it hooked up properly; however, when I go to boot it up with both hard drives powered on I get a screen saying it is recognizing the hard disks and press F1 to save the configuration.. it reboots after this then it goes to the slave hard drive and does the same thing, then back to the master, then back to the slave... after several times of doing this I get a blank screen when Windows should start loading. Thats that.. nothing else happens.

Now if I plug one in at a time they each work properly~ What the hell? can someone please help me with this problem?

Are the jumpers set to Master and slave?

Is the BIOS Boot Menu set to boot the Master?

When you say: "Now if I plug one in at a time they each work properly" are you saying that each has an Operating System installed? Was your intention for a dual-boot configuration?

If the jumpers are proper it sounds like a Boot Menu problem.

Yes the jumpers are set properly.

When I am in the bios menu I do not see what you are referring to. I know where the device configurations are but the second hard disk does not show up anywhere unless it is powered on solely.

Also NO my intentions were not to have a dual boot configuration, what do I need installed on the second disk or just format it? ..... I was wanting to use the second hard disk for extra storage space. My master hard disk is using a Windows XP OS if that has anything to do with this.

Thank you for your assitance, I would appreciate you continuing to help.

You will need to format the new drive after it is recognized and everything is booting OK.

You can do this through XP or the drive probably came with a setup CD or per Compaq as the link will show. Step 7: Configure the new hard drive.

Anyway before any of this the drive obviously needs to be recognized by the BIOS.

Are these both ATA/IDE drives? Or are you mixing ATA/IDE with SATA?

In the BIOS Settings there should be a Boot Menu listing all possible boot devices e.g. Floppy; DVD/CD; HDD0; HDD1; etc.

If this is perhaps a Compaq issue what is the exact model?

Is this a Presario 5000? If so here is a detailed hard drive install guide:

Yes it is a Compaq 5000. Thank you for the link; however, this is not a new hard drive I am adding to my computer it is a hard drive from a old computer. The hard disk I am wanting to add is a Maxtor 40GB hard disk.

As far as the bios goes I found the list of all possible drives and removable drives and once again only one drive is recognized at a time.

Also when I try plugging the power in on the hard disk while windows is booted up on the master Windows XP has froze 9/10 times and the one time it didnt it gave me the blue screen of death which was before I formatted the hard disk.

the exact model number for the compaq is 5422rsh which is a presario model.

    now what do you suggest?

    Compaq Presario 5422RSH Desktop PC

Hard Drive 60.0 GB UltraDMA Hard Drive is listed as what was installed.

I am a bit confused by the
    #
    Onboard PATA/SATA Adapters
    #
    Onboard PATA/SATA Configuration

But this could be an issue. Again just to verify: both of your drives are ATA? Not PATA or SATA? And the old Maxtor is UltraDMA?

If you want to try to ID the motherboard to get more details run this scan and post back what is listed under Main Circuit Board

As a test I would set the old Maxtor jumpers to Master and put it on the Secondary Channel (temporarily replacing the DVD/CD drive) just to see if this configuration is detected.

Also you can not make any mechanical changes inside the case with the computer running. This will definitely blow out Windows.

describe to me what the differences between ata/pata/sata please... i am not sure how to answer your question.

    Main Circuit Board

    Board: Compaq 077Ch
    Serial Number: 3D21KMD8201G
    Bus Clock: 400 megahertz
    BIOS: Compaq 686Y2 v2.06 12/03/2001

I also just tried switching the hard drive jumpers into the secondary channel and had the same results. It recognized both hard disks and I hit F1 to save the configuration, then I had to do that several times with no progress or results.

Most likely they are both ATA being that that board is over 5 years old. I was confused by the SATA listing in the BIOS. SATA is a newer faster interface. The most physical distinction is the connection. Rather that the 40/80 pin ribbon cable for ATA the SATA uses a ½" 7 pin connection.

I have searched that board before without much luck in details:

I would see if you can get both drives connected on different channels i.e. As a test I would set the old Maxtor jumpers to Master and put it on the Secondary Channel (temporarily replacing the DVD/CD drive) just to see if this configuration is detected.

How is your Boot Menu set in the BIOS?
