    Question ATA IDE drives

I have an 80gb IDE drive now. I ordered a couple of 160gb drives to store video. I was shipped ATA drives, is there any way to get them to work? I have an intel 845 motherboard if that helps..... Anybody know????? Thanks

    IDE and ATA are synonymous.

Do you need help in how to physically install them?

Well, here is the deal. I built a computer for somebody using removable drive enclosures and IDE drives. They use it to store video from surveillance cameras. They rotate 4 of the removable drives to store the video longer. They wanted another one, so I built it, but it doesn't work. When I use the ATA drives, I get a SMART error (sorry, can't remember exactly what it said), if I use one of the IDE drives it works just fine. I can't figure out why it won't work with the ATA drives. I don't know if this makes any sense, but I am confused.

The SMART error might be helpful. What is the exact make & model of these drives.

There is no difference in the standard interface of ATA/IDE unless the speeds are an issue.

    ATA-4 Ultra-ATA/33, ATA-5 Ultra-ATA/66, ATA-6 Ultra-ATA/100, ATA-7 Ultra-ATA/133.

They are all Seagate Barracuda 7200. Got them from CDW.

Woops, also. When the SMART error came up, it gave the option F4 to continue (if i remember right) and then it would boot, but not show the removable drive. Does that help? Thanks for the info.

    They are Ultra ATA/100?

What about the other drives? What are they?

Are you saying that the drives just don't show up under My Computer?

Are they listed in Disk Management?

In general you would have to format the drive before it is recognized and functional under My Computer.

Correct, they are Ultra ATA/100. There are 4 of them, and one 40gb Western Digital with the OS and other software on it. The removable drives for the first system are 1 Seagate, and 3 WD. This is what comes up when I boot with the new system:

    Fixed Disk 0: PM-WDC WD400JB-00ENA0
    Fixed Disk 1: SS-ST3160212A

Sec Slave Hard DisK:S.M.A.R.T. Status BAD, Backup and Replace
    Press <F4> to Resume

OK. I think that is it. But, sorry for this stupid question, but how do I format the 2nd drive. It does come up under device mgr.
