Unhappy emachine 420 - no power.... help

    Hi.

My inlaws have a (max) 2 year old emachine that has been perfect. suddely, the machine will not power on and the orange disk led is continuously flashing.... can anyone please assist in figuring out the problem? I have a couple of suspicions with PSU and MBoard - but need confirmations.

    Many thanks

do you get any beeps? do the keyboard lights flash?

No, just an annoying sound through the speakers (like interference beeps on every flash). The Disk light just flashes with clicking within the box......... The power on button does nothing.

    Thanks

I'm a little confused Andy02129 - is the hard disk light flashing and sound coming out of the speakers and something clicking inside when there's no power to the system, i.e. before you've pressed the power button on?

Have you tried unplugging it from the mains power supply for a few minutes?

Are the speakers beeping at the same time as the hard disk LED is flashing or at the same time as the keyboard lights are flashing?

If all of this is happening with the mains cable live but the power button switched off, then I would confirm that the fault is either with the power supply (PSU), the power circuit in the motherboard or the power button in the front of the case.

    Correct -
The PC was powered off.... the mains connected. The H/D LED started flashing (nothing noticed on the keyboard - didn't actually check) and when the speakers were plugged in, every time the LED flashed, the sound, more like popping/tapping came from the speakers. Have unplugged the PSU and left...... no different..... the Power Button on the from of the box will not respond.... I thought either PSU of M/B issue ?

Definitely sounds like the PSU or the motherboard's power circuit, though it would be almost impossible to say which one without doing some electrical testing. And that's totally out of my area of knowledge I'm afraid. If you want to pick one to replace, I'd go for the PSU first as it will be cheapest and quickest to change. Replacing the motherboard will normally mean that you have to install Windows again.

    Andy,

I'm so relieved to find someone else who is expeiencing exactly the same symptoms as my father emachine 420... I'm looking to replace the PSU and/or motherboard, obviosuly I'm very curious as to whether you've fix your inlaws 420 before I make a purchase.

    Thanks for any information

    interesting

so ive been given an e420 to look at and it has no power - the moment i search for it in google and this thread comes up

actually it is a slightly different problem in that there is no life at all - no lights no nothing.........ive tested with a different psu and still nothing

the reason it found its way to me was because the owner was less than happy to be told by PCworld that they need a new mboard and they will have to pay for it .....such is life i guess but i think their pride has made them go elsewhere

as far as the mboard is concerned it is no suprise it has gone as it is a trigem (who I hear you ask?) which is a generic korean based company......time to look for a decent replacement which is no mean feat for an old socket 478 !

Hi, well I'm quite happy about replacing the motherboard its just a case of where can I get an identical one mainly to prove it is the motherboard at fault, and perhaps get later revision if there were known problems. Do TriGem have a support site? I'll go googling in a mo.
