    HardDrive problem

    Ok, I need more help.

After installing a new HD, my old HD won't boot up. I had my coworker helped me and got the Windows installed to the new HD. Problem is, I really need the old data from the old HD...

    old HD won't boot up.
    no access to HD
it has 110G of files I desparately need

    Any help? guide?

    Thanks in advance!

have you set up your hard drives as master and slave?

if so if you boot to the new drive(master) you should be able to see the old drive (slave)

ahem* yes, I remebered to master & slave the two drives accordingly (master for old HD, slave for new HD).

But... I might have deleted something while I used WindowsXP boot disc to format the NEW HD. I can't retrace my steps now since i am computer challenged...

But thanks for your reply ^^

A buddy of mine asked me to send him the old HD to Cali so he can retrieve the info with data recovery tool. But sending things across the border is not a perfered option (I'm in Canada).

did your new hard drive have data you needed on before you formatted ?

if you put your new hard drive in will the machine boot?

nope.. It's a brand new HD I bought on boxing day. =P it's new. from Maxtor.

Now the new HD boots up and starts Windows like any other working PC. Just concerned about the old HD... =P

    um...

I've tried all possible methods.. and my coworker is pretty good with fixing computer stuff, even he can't boot it up.

    The main problem is:

old HD has no response whatsoever. x___x

no access to it after may attempts with various setting.

    thanks again!

    have a great weekend

it sounds like your old hard drive may have gone to meet it's maker...:-(

what make is the hard drive. I have heard of people taking the logic board of a hard drive and swapping it with one from an identical hard drive to retrieve the data

Just to clarify some points: you loaded XP on the new drive and it boots fine?

You set the old drive as slave?

You cannot boot the old drive. (Not a question but a statement). Your new hard drive is now the boot drive.
You should, after booting the new drive, see the old drive listed under My Computer.

If it is not then I would reboot and check the BIOS settings. Is the old drive detected by the BIOS?

If not then I would first off re-check all the connections. If still no luck try unplugging your DVD/CD drive and plug the old hear drive in there (secondary Master). Change the jumpers back to Master for this.
