USB behaving badly.
Hi there,
I know this might sound like I should go onto an ipod forum but I know I've got a problem with my computer as opposed to the ipod.
The issue - I've got an ipod shuffle - essentially a usb hard drive stick. I know that it's working perfectly because I've taken it to apple to check over and it even plays music.
Firstly, when I plug it into a high speed USB 2.0 port the computer tells me that "the device can work faster if I plug it into a high speed USB 2.0 port". In other words, the USB port immediately thinks its not high speed anymore. Other devices attach fine but somehow my computer is getting confused. As I said, the ipod device is working perfectly on other computers.
Secondly, when I go to the ipod in the device manager and double click it, it tells me that there is no driver installed for this item (totally untrue) and when I reinstall the driver it tells me that the data is incorrect.
I really hope someone can advise me on any aspect of this.
Many thanks
Shark

Hi Shark,
Sounds to me like your USB port drivers could be the issue. Windows has its own "generic" USB port drivers but you may require drivers that are specific to your motherboard. If you do have motherboard-specific drivers installed, try deleting the USB ports and host controller from Device Manager (right-click on My Computer, select Properties, click on Hardware tab), then reboot and Windows will re-install them (you may be asked for the driver disk). If that still doesn't help, check the motherboard manufacturer's web site to see if there are updated USB 2.0 drivers for your system.
If you aren't sure what the make and model of your motherboard is, you can find out by running the D-A-L Online Hardware Scan - there's a link to this at the bottom of my signature.
Hope that helps - let us know how you get on

Hey there DJ
Thanks for that. I'm going to try it although I haven't actually got the driver disks so if I uninstall and reboot windows, could I have a problem?
Would I be able to system restore if neccessary once I've deleted the USB ports and need to get them back?
Thanks Shark

If you've got Windows XP System Restore running, then you should be able to get back to the last restore point in the unlikely event that it all goes wrong. If you go into the System Restore area, I think that you can actually force it to create a restore point before you go and delete anything.
Alternatively, you could run the D-A-L.com Online Hardware Scan, find out which motherboard you have, go to the manufacturer's web site and see if there are any USB drivers that you can download.
Hope that helps
