my vaio notepad pcg-fx605 says 'the system could not be restarted from its previous location due to a read failure. delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu.' what should i do?

Sounds like perhaps the last time it booted was from a floppy disk or CDROM that you have now removed so now it can't find it.

When you boot up a Sony Vaio laptop, they normally have a Sony logo screen that hides what's going on in the background (memory checks, drive checks, etc). Try hitting the Escape button after switching on, as soon as you see something on the screen. That may give you more options and, if it's like the Sony Vaio that I've been fixing this week, you should also see the system boot menu that the message was referring to.
