    Angry Not loading OS

    Hi,

This is a long one so pleeeeeeeeeease bear with me!!!

Recently my computer started acting up and eventually I couldn't get further than the memory test screen. I determined that it wasn't the RAM, as I replaced it and it didn't help. It wasn't the hard drive because I tried a different one and that didn't solve the problem. The CPU was fine, but it kept displaying the wrong frequencies, even though the CMOS had the correct ones saved. The clock battery was OK. I ended up getting a new motherboard. When I put it in and set the CMOS correctly, the correct CPU and RAM frequencies were displayed, but when it tried to load XP the computer decided to reboot.

I ended up taking the hard drive to my sister's computer and trying a fresh install of XP on it, as I couldn't get into it otherwise. After this, I put in the hard drive to my computer. When booting up I eventually got to a blueish screen saying "An error has been encountered and your system has been halted to prevent corruption" or something like that. It gave me the following technical information:

    0x0000007B (0xF7946640, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

I thought that the hard drive might be the problem again but it works fine on my sister's computer. No errors, viruses etc, and the jumper is correctly set. I took a smaller hard drive I had kicking about and installed Win98 on it. It installed fine and I could get into it OK (from my computer), but it couldn't detect the CD-ROM drive so I couldn't install any drivers.

Please please please help if you can!!! I really appreciate it!!!

    Matthew

    Hi

Initial thought would be RAM problem..I know you changed it but what type of RAM do you have and how many sticks?

1 stick of 256MB PC3200 (old) and 1 stick of 512MB PC2700 (new). Because I have an Athlon XP the FSB is 333. If I leave in just one or the other the OS still doesn't load.

The HD out of my computer works perfectly as a master drive in the other computer so it's definitely not it - what are the chances that the problem is the video card/CPU ?

    Hiya

what are the chances that the problem is the video card/CPU ?
Pretty good I would say, its one of them annoying issues where you need 2 of everything to troubleshoot all your hardware. If it were me I would borrow someones graphics card and try that out quickly to rule it out - once you tried that you've pretty much looked at everything but processor so that would have to be the next thing to try. Something else - have you flashed the BIOS on your mobo recently ?

Mobo is brand spanking new :S I suppose I could give the old one a flash...

Also....Check the processor is sitting tight to the mobo and check for any damaged pins.....
