Dell Inspiron 5100 Starts By Itself

DELL Inspiron 5100 doesn't want to power down!

    Hello everyone!

I have DELL Inspiron 5100 and the problem I have with it
is that every time I'm trying to power it down it shuts down,
but right away starts up, so it is like restarting. Also the only
way to turn it off is to take the battery out and unplug it
from the adapter cord, but then it is enough to put the battery
back in (after it's turned off) and it starts by itself again.

When it's running it also turns itself off sometimes, but of course
starts up right away after the "shut down".

During the booting process or at any time while using it, pressing and
holding the POWER button does not work at all.

    Any help would be appreciated!

    Regards,

    Matt

Here is a quick troubleshooter to run thru:

Let us know if this helps.

    Thanks for the response!

That "troubleshooter" doesn't seem to be really helpful..
There is a lot of general instructions on configuring your system,
but no forum or anything like that...

    Matt

Sorry: That link appears to have a time reset.

If it reverts back to the standard page then:

What I got from entering Inspirion 5100 Restarts is this page:

System Spontaneously Shuts Down or Reboots [ Dell™ Latitude™, Inspiron™, Mobile XPS™ and Dell Precision™ Mobile Workstations ]

Ok... I decided to rewrite the whole thing, so it's clear.

    - Computer powers up without a problem.

    - When I try to shut it down by start->turn off computer->turn off
it shuts the system off, but doesn't really power it down what results
in the computer booting up again instantly unless the LID is closed right
away after I press the "turn off button".

    - To turn it off I have to unplug AC and take the battery out.

    - When I put the battery back in it does nothing when the LID is closed. When I open
the LID again it does not start even with pressing the POWER button! I have to plug
the AC cord in to start it up.

    - The POWER button seems to be not responding; whenever I press and hold it
    nothing happens.

    - I've checked all possible BIOS settings (wake-on-anything) and it brought
    no result either.

I hope this gives you a better image of what is going on with my Ispiron 5100.

    Regards,

    Matt

Dell has a diagnostic here although I doubt it will find anything (unless it can check your battery):

My guess is either a dying battery or damage to your Power button & or Lid switch perhaps from the previous spill.

What happens when you run off AC with NO battery installed?

The thing is that it was working ok after I fixed the video (after the spill). On the AC only it acts the same way as it was before, which means it will keep on restarting with the LID open.
When I turned it off this time (with the lid closed) it turned back on not after I opened the LID rtight away but after I actually pressed the button, so the button failure can be excluded (I guess...)

Oh... I've went through that before I even decided to post anything here :] It is weird problem, I have to admit, and I'm starting to think that there may be some mobo issues here...

Ok... Since it was working fine before I will try doing something completly not related (theoretically) to the problem - I'm running system restore! I will edit the post with the results shortly! (Assuming it won't fail on the way)....
