(huge post) Crashes, BSOD, etc. for months now!!!

Custom built (by a company online) computer that my brother sold to me...

    P4 hyperthreaded 2.8 gig processor
1 gig PNY ram (or 1.0 gig PNY, plus another 512 mb of unknown, will explain later)
    400-450ish watt Antec power supply
    abit vt7 motherboard
    creative audigy gamer sound card
geforce fx 5700 ultra video card
....all the latest drivers I can find

About 11 weeks ago I was putting new ram in, but apparently the ram was bad and fried my old mobo (I put the ram in correctly, with all power off and plugs out and while I was grounded, but still my computer got screwed). The computer at first rebooted after the new ram was put in, and simply wouldn't start.

Thinking maybe the new ram was bad, I pulled it out and rebooted again, and this time my comp beeped and had a hot/burn smell to it. Thus, in order to get things working again in time to get back to my college assignments, that night I went and bought a mobo (abit vt7) and drove to a friend's house where he put the mobo in (he built computers for the navy).

After having the new mobo put in, the computer still wouldnt start. Eventually, I took my computer to a repair shop, and the shop copied over some files/reinstalled xp/etc, and sent my computer home.

The first night of the computer being back, it rebooted by itself, but I thought perhaps it was just a random one time thing (and I didn't exactly have the money to pay the shop again for more labor).

I then had a multiple week period where my computer would randomly freeze, reboot, go BSOD, etc. Both sticks of ram in my computer were bought after the initial incident, and both have been tested for multiple passes in memtest86, with no errors found.

...Eventually I found a flash utility for clearing my cmos and flashing my bios, so I used that utility. My computer was fine for about two days, but then it started doing weird things again (though less than before the flash utility was used). Since then I have checked various forums, sent in windows xp errors, etc., but I have been unable to solve the problem.

As I mentioned above, I have downloaded and tinkered with the latest video card drivers, sound card drivers, mobo drivers, etc. I have tried completely uninstalling my sound card drivers, and letting my mobo handle onboard sound, but this didn't help.

I also have taken the side of the case off of the computer, and put a fan a few feet from it so that cool air was blowing on the internal area, but this did not help either.

I am by no means a computer person, but over the last two and a half months I have spent literally at least 100 hours trying to get this to work. I have read countless forums where ram is thought to be the culprit, and on many of these forums the person having the problem has no ram issues that they can find (like myself). Likewise, I have checked in my windows settings for device conflicts, I have reset my swap file, and I have scandisked/defragged/virus checked more times than I care to remember.

At various times I have turned off the auto-reboot option (I keep it on for fear my comp will go weird while I am sleeping), and I have gotten various messages, such as the irql equal (something like that) message, as well as numerous mesages from windows that a device driver is causing the conflict (when it does create a minidump file, it tells me this in the "send in error" box).

I have tried to scan the minidump files for anything in particular that jumps out at me, and the only thing I notice is that EAX is mentioned sometimes (this being a feature of my sound card). However, as I mentioned I have completely uninstalled my audigy gamer drivers in favor of letting my mobo handle the sound, but still I have reboots/BSOD's/locking up (sometimes with looping sound)/etc. My sound card drivers were always finnicky before the major incident happened, but never THIS finnicky.

Also, I have let various programs run to monitor the temperature of my comp (including one program that came with my mobo), and all of the temps I get seem to be in normal ranges.

Now, in the last few weeks I had managed to get my problem to mainly be BSOD and/or reboots when playing games online. Tinkering a bit, I got my BSOD and/or reboots to be limited to about one every 2 hours of gaming by turning sound acceleration to basic.

However, the other day I was using limewire, and my machine simply froze. Not BSOD or reboot, just froze. I rebooted the comp and opened limewire, and after a few minutes it froze again...For the rest of the night I kept re-running limewire, only for it to keep freezing, with the only thing I noticed being that it would freeze when I had a lot of different users that I was downloading from (from over 30 different users in some cases).

...So, I now had BSOD every 2 hours of gaming, and a program that I could make freeze on command if conditions were right. Odd as it sounds, something about this made me think about a ram stick on my desk. At the time of the initial incident, I had two sticks of ram, the one in my comp, and the new one I put in. The new one had scorch marks, and I took the computer shop at it's word for saying the old one was bad as well. However, given that many of my errors over the last few months have been problems that "typically" relate to ram, I was curious if perhaps the shop told me my old stick of ram was bad simply because of some of the BSOD's they were bound to be getting in their own work on it.

As such, I put the old ram stick in, and my computer started fine. I surfed the web and listened to music, still fine. I played a game online....twenty minutes went by, not a problem to be had. However, in the middle of a round, my computer went BSOD. It told me something along the lines of sysaudio.sys failed, or had a problem, or something like that.

Now in my experience, putting new hardware (the old ram) in a computer, and getting a new error, tends to be a good bet your new hardware is involved....so I am aware that if I pull the old ram (that I put in today) back out, I should probably be able to get back to my one BSOD every 2 hours of gaming. However, given that it is sysaudio.sys, and that when my comp often freezes I usually get a looping sound, and that I had to turn my audio acceleration to basic to reduce the BSOD's, freezes, etc, I am wondering if maybe it is all related to sound in some way.

Another important piece of information is that I have no way of reinstalling or restoring xp. The hard drive in my computer is a maxtor 80 gb drive that came with an hp system that my dad bought around 2 or 3 years ago. At the time I didn't know anything about computers, so I didn't care that my computer didn't come with an XP disk, as the place that sold it said "XP Recovery means we don't need to give you a disk, since you can just recover it from the drive itself." If I could just get my hands on that sales person now.....

Anywho, point being, I have no XP disk. In fact, I can't even system restore my hard drive anymore, as since the initial crash/boom/death 10 weeks ago, my comp won't even let me use the restore feature. On top of this, I can't risk getting a windows XP oem disk......

What I mean is, the computer repair place said they would have to charge me if I brought my comp back in, because they said my reboot, even on night 1, isn't necessarily something they did, so they would charge me for looking at it again. Ok, that isn't an option. However, if I get an OEM disk of XP, and reinstalling it doesn't work, don't I run the risk of the OEM key being useless once I start swapping out cards and such to try to figure out what the problem is? (assuming I could get a new sound or video card for the holidays that is)

The main problem I have with this whole deal is that from all of the effort I have put into this, what I have learned is that it could be ANYTHING on my computer. Speaking as a poor college student (yeah, aren't many of us that person at some point :P), I really don't have the money to buy a new sound card, a new video card, even more new ram, a new power supply, a new hard drive, a new retail copy of windows, etc, just so that I can keep swapping them in and out to see what, if anything, fixes the problem. (I feel a bit like I did when my car kept losing power, and the mechanic told me that a wire was probably loose somewhere.....I asked where, and he said "well basically anywhere there is a wire in your car is a possibility, we would just need to take it apart and look around".......REALLY, gee, thanks for the help!)

So here I sit, none the closer to personally being able to solve this problem than I was 10 weeks ago. I am asking, nay, begging for assistance! I have bookmarked 8 other forum sites where I posted something similar to this message, and nowhere have I gotten any reply other than "it is probably bad ram", or "we have no clue". Any tips? Hints? Suggestions? Questions?......I have minidump files (several) that I am glad to post if need be, plus I am willing to go through and find/type out all the instances of events logged in event viewer (tcp/ip limit reached, system error, etc). HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!

p.s. this whole message is a copy and paste job from another forum I visited...since the day I composed it, I switched some of the cards around, as I had IRQ conflict/sharing going on with cards in my comp. I managed to make the only sharing be between my vid card and an ohee compliant thingy. Still though, my comp is giving me random problems!

....Also, I scanned this forum and found a problem somewhat like mine from a long while back, and in that thread someone suggested downloading and using debugwiz, then pasting the results in the reply...so here are the results of my latest crash....

This means a trap occurred in kernel mode, and it's a trap of a kind
that the kernel isn't allowed to have/catch (bound trap) or that
is always instant death (double fault). The first number in the
bugcheck params is the number of the trap (8 = double fault, etc)
Consult an Intel x86 family manual to learn more about what these
traps are. Here is a *portion* of those codes:
    If kv shows a taskGate
use .tss on the part before the colon, then kv.
Else if kv shows a trapframe
    use .trap on that value
    Else
.trap on the appropriate frame will show where the trap was taken

    OK

Let's start with the hard drive. Download PowerMax & run the tests:

    http://www.maxtor.com/portal/site/Ma...&downloadID=22

You say that this was originally an HP drive with an XP OEM? But then the shop guy reinstalled XP? Do you know what his source was? Anytime you change mobo's you would have to reinstall XP.

Anyway see if PowerMax gives the OK to your drive first off. If so then look at your dumps for similarities. The one you posted:

Bug check 0x7F usually occurs after the installation of faulty or mismatched hardware (especially memory) or in the event that installed hardware fails.

0x0000000D — An exception not covered by some other exception; a protection fault that pertains to access violations for applications.

    ntkrnlmp.exe hmmm.....

Also are you overclocking anything? Does the computer work under a conventional load? i.e no games; no limewire; 30 simultaneous downloads!!!?

Do you notice any creaking noise from the hard drive?

Let us know how PowerMax goes for starters.

I was curious about PowerMax the other day, and I even downloaded it...however on the maxtor page it says:

    "Step-by-Step Instructions - Downloading PowerMax

NOTE: The PowerMax download is a self-extracting file.

    1. After downloading to your Windows desktop, insert a clean formatted floppy diskette into your A:\ drive.
    2. Double-click on the PowerMax diskette creator icon.
    3. When the Maxtor pop-up screen displays, click on the "Create Floppy" option.

The files will extract on to the floppy diskette, creating a bootable version of the PowerMax utility. Do not download PowerMax directly to a floppy. PowerMax extracts from a Win32 environment only and will not extract from 16-bit DOS mode.

WARNING: ALL DATA WILL BE LOST WHEN PERFORMING THE LOW LEVEL FORMAT QUICK OR FULL OPTIONS.

Maxtor recommends that users backup all critical data and removing other hard drives before performing this test."

Does that all data lost apply to any of the tests? All of them? I really can't afford to lose anything right now in particular, as final work for school is coming up the next two weeks (including many papers). To be honest, the warning scares me a bit in terms of the tests....

Next, the drive was in an hp pavillion system, yes. I am assuming it is an OEM version as the letters OEM are in my "registered to" line in my general system info. In terms of the repair shop, they copied the files I told them I wanted to keep (homework and music) to one of their drives, then completely reinstalled windows xp from (I have to assume) an xp disk they have, then put my saved stuff back on my drive.

No creaking noise from the hard drive that I can hear, and I don't overclock. In dealing with "conventional" loads the computer seems to run ok now, but this changes off and on. For a long while it would reboot at random, or go BSOD. Eventually I updated my mobo drivers, and this helped a fair amount, but it would still reboot/freeze/bsod at various times (browsing the web, using word, etc).

To list every single thing I have done to this computer would be impossible, as I have done so much in the hopes of fixing it, I have lost track. However, the one thing that seems to help no matter how the computer is acting is to turn my sound acceleration to basic. That is not to say that I have no problems with the computer when the sound acceleration is set to basic...just that lowering the acceleration tends to decrease my problem amount.

Yet, I still get weird stuff at random....the last week or so my computer has run well most of the time, but it has frozen once while I was surfing the web, and once while I was listening to music (with the sound looping from the moment of freeze). Aside from this though, my problems have mainly been when I try to play any games (my games will crash, or my comp will reboot/bsod altogether). For example, Call of Duty 2 is always shutting down and saying it has generated errors. Or, it will go BSOD, or reboot, or even just the random weird thing like I will have my sound shut off completely. Even if I leave the game, my sound isn't there. It is on in that the speakers are powered and all the software says everything is in order, but there is simply no sound.

Trust me, I am glad/thankful my computer works at all. I need this computer for school, so gaming is secondary. However, aside from knowing it won't randomly freeze up on me in the middle of an online test or something, it would also be nice to not have to drastically lower the sound abilities of my computer (as I have a 5.1 surround sound system specifically so I can enjoy games and movies and music).

In terms of limewire, if I am downloading a large file (for example, the last file I was downloading was a 30 minute mp3....sounds of nature waterfall) then I tend to get a lot of connections to other users. I am not downloading 30 files, yet I am, as the 30 users are all sending me pieces of the same audio file (that is how it works, isn't it?). That being said, if I allow this many connections (sometimes more, sometimes less) my computer tends to freeze up completely. Not reboot, not BSOD, just freeze. To my knowledge, limewire is the only non-game software I have been able to consistently recreate a certain error with.

The absolute latest thing I did was to take a cue from a random google hit about the error, and check for zone alarm files, as a zone alarm file was causing some of my BSOD errors before (which leads me to believe I have multiple problems compounding via one another). Much to my suprise, I managed to find a few more zone alarm files on my computer, so I deleted those (however I left the registry zone alarm files alone as I didn't want to risk f.u.b.a.r.ing the computer). Even more to my suprise, after having deleted the non-registry zone alarm files, I was able to play Call of Duty 2 for about 2 hours straight with no problems. I am hoping I have fixed something on my computer, but then again, Call of Duty 2 played for 4 hours the other day before it started rebooting again, so I would have to just play it more to see if it happens again.

Lastly, I noticed that my Dr. Watson dump file is like 300 MB, is that normal?

You do not want to use the PowerMax format options. You want to run these two tests:

    1. Basic Quick (90 Second) Test
    2. Advanced Test (Full Scan Test)

There are no data issues with these tests.

Zone Alarm is interesting... I recommend RegSeeker as a free relatively thorough registry cleaner.
It backs up as well as color codes safety. Remove all green entries:

    http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm

I would assume that Dr. Watson is just loaded with all your dump logs.

Have you compared any of these for similar:

    BUGCHECK_STR: 0x7f_d

    &

    IMAGE_NAME: ntkrnlmp.exe

Also has the computer been running check disk after crashes? If not schedule it:

    start > run > cmd
in the new window type chkdsk/f
when prompted to run on boot choose Y & reboot
this will check for & fix any disk errors.

Also just curious if the HP Recovery is still on your drive:

From the Windows XP desktop, click Start, All Programs, and then one of the following options:
NOTE: The following options are for HP PCs. Compaq PCs will have similar options (for example, Compaq Tools).

HP Tools, and then HP PC System Recovery.
Hewlett-Packard, hp pavilion pc tools, and hp pc system recovery.
PC Help & Tools, and then HP PC System Recovery.

Alrighty, I have scheduled chkdsk for the next time I reboot, and I am going to try those powermax tests. Also, I am going to download and use the registry cleaner.

    In terms of

    BUGCHECK_STR: 0x7f_d

    &

    IMAGE_NAME: ntkrnlmp.exe

I don't know how to open the dr. watson crash files, but I know that in the minidump files I can open, ntkrnlmp.exe has appeared before.

The HP recovery feature is still on my system, but it doesn't work. I asked a teacher at school about it and apparently once I moved the hard drive to a new mobo, or something like that (maybe just the reinstall?), it made it where it won't let me use HP restore.

I will post later about some of the tests and such, as for now though, just wanted to check in with an update.

Hmmm....can't say as this is good......

I checked my hard drive with the maxtor tools...and it indeed says my drive is failing. (Actually, it gave me an 8 digit code and sent me to Maxtor's site, and Maxtor's site says if the test gave you an 8 digit code, the drive is failing).

Right, so now I need a new drive, and a new copy of XP, AND I do not if getting these will fix the problem...just great....

So, assuming I can somehow get at least 200 bucks to spend on a new drive/new copy of XP, how would I go about transferring my data from my old drive to a new one, as I have no functional burner of any sort, and I have about 13 gigs or so of stuff that I need to transfer...

Also, suggestions on a good (but not over 150 dollars, if possible) Hard drive?

If you opt to buy another Maxtor MaxBlast 4 has a cloning feature.

You will be able to copy over your entire drive to the new one.

The copy feature lets you make an exact duplicate of your existing hard drive.

Another link as that first didn't seem to go.

Also MaxBlast is included on CD with the drive.

I am curious then, should I hurridly try to get a loan from someone so that I could possibly get this?

    http://www.compusa.com/products/prod...16138&pfp=cat3

It is an Maxtor Ultra16 250GB Hard Drive 7200RPM, Internal, ATA/133 that compusa has for 60 bucks for the next few days. Granted, you have to drop something like 130 to start with, and then mess around with 80 bucks in rebates, but provided the drive is an ok one, why not spend the money on that with at least the possibility of getting rebates back?

Also, when you say exact duplicate, does this mean I could still use my copy of XP that is already on this drive....will that be copied over as well, or will I need a new key?
