Welp, I had a really nice run of the computer working fine, but last night it went BSOD with the 0x00000007F message again (give or take a few 0's). So I turned off Hyper threading in the bios....will see how it goes.

Well, that's what the Intel documentation seems to suggest but, to be honest, I've only ever come across this problem once before and that was a very long time ago. If the CPU core voltage is set incorrectly, it could cause immediate and permanent damage to the processor and/or motherboard so it's not something that I would want to encourage too much until everything else is ruled out. Let's see whether switching off hyper-threading makes any difference first.Originally Posted by Kellnos
Alrighty....well, HT is off and my computer froze again about an hour ago. Overall less freezups are happening, and I can even game for rather long times without problems, which is very cool. The issue is certainly still there, but at least some of the things you fellas have been helping me with have put a dent in the problem.
Ho-hum.....My computer is still BSOD'ing, with the latest one being the "hardware error" screen. Something I have noticed and commented on before is that often times it happens when I have my sound on...and this time was no exception, as I was watching a flash cartoon with the speakers up, then a pop noise happened as the comp went BSOD. Power supply is ruled out, as is memory, as is the hard drive, as is the os. I am tempted to get a different sound card, but as I have already uninstalled and taken out the one in there now, I know it won't fix the problem.
Given all that has gone on, I am thinking one of two thoughts. A: physical damage occurred to the processor during the initial incident, and this makes the whole computer unstable. Or, B: this motherboard should be taken back and I should get a new one. I have read on abit's site about various people having issues with this board, but I am sure this happens with any motherboard. I don't mean to just "blame it on abit" as it were, but honestly I am running out of things that could be causing the problem...so I am thinking this board might be wreaking havoc on me.
Any word on how to change the voltage on my p4 by chance Nafey?
Alright, browsing some more sites online, I have decided to up my agp and vcore settings a bit. Basically I upped my vcore settings by 0.5 volts, and I upped my agp voltage by 1.0 volts. I will report back if it helps any!
Alrighty, time for an update. So changing my vcore settings did a whole lot of nothing. Since then, I have bought a new sound card, a new video card, bought a whole new copy of xp home, and managed to make my computer read the 3rd stick of ram properly that it stopped seeing a few weeks back.....nice, but didn't fix my problem. So, assuming I can get my problem fixed, I basically have a really nice upgraded computer now, as compared to 4 months ago....and I might try to sell all of my old parts to my brother if he feels like putting a computer together :P.
Aside from that, I also worked with USB hub drivers, and network card drivers. Not only nothing, but negative yardage actually, as getting the most recent network card drivers made my internet drop every 5 minutes.
Skip to today, and I am googling various phrases about vt7's and errors. Reading a forum archive section from the abit site, I found a few people who were having the EXACT same problems as me. This isn't unusual for the abit forum, but what was unique was that these people have found things that actually helped the problem. Big rule numero uno is apparently, DO NOT install the via 4 in 1 drivers that are on the motherboard install disc.
Apparently VIA actually put this up on their site at one point....something in their 4 in 1 drivers cause VT7's to go nuts (nice that the software I am supposed to install with my motherboard apparently breaks it...). Aside from that, I also read a reply in which someone said that setting the memory in bios to single channel helped him a lot.
The single channel thing I have already tried, and it didn't help (I tried it weeks ago out of random tinkering, and before having read the site thread). Tonight though, I turned it back to single channel. However, I also went through and uninstalled any driver related to via 4 in 1 that I could find. Since then, my computer hasn't locked up or rebooted. I am trying to be cautiously optimistic on this one.
On one hand, about 3 times since this fiasco began, I have felt really good about "having fixed" the computer, only to have it go wonky on me and make me cuss like a sailor. On the other hand, I had messengers, the web, and some music going earlier, and nothing went boom. So, as of now I am praying to God that my computer is fixed. If not, I have at least ruled out a fair amount, as pretty much everything in it is now new compared to what was in it when it went kablooey. If the errors do come back, then it is either my processor, or a conflict between the motherboard and goodness only knows what.
I will keep you guys up to date on it. For now though, should anyone ever have an abit VT7 and come on here complaining about weird problems, remember......NEVER INSTALL THE VIA 4 IN 1 DRIVERS. Pray for my computer :P
Another update. My computer kept crapping out the last few days, so finally I had enough and just took the motherboard back to compusa. Thankfully they don't carry VT7's anymore, so they allowed me the money I spent on it to be put on a new one (woohoo extended return policy I bought). Sadly, the compusa near me only had 1 other board that could meet what I needed in terms of socket 478, agp, ram slots, etc. Soooooooo, now I have a gigabyte motherboard in my system.
I haven't spent much time with it yet, as I ran a system backup utility that came with the board as soon as windows booted, and it ran so long I fell asleep waiting for it to finish :P However, the new board is in, and the system is running, so now it is a matter of seeing if anything goes wonky on me. More to come!
I've always found Gigabyte boards to be very reliable so .... fingers crossed![]()
Dare I say it? I think you can close the books on this one. I haven't had one problem from my machine since putting the new motherboard in a few days ago. I have played online games, used limewire, surfed the web, gone to chats, etc, all with no problems at all. Thanks for all of the help I have gotten on this forum....(and please take this the right way), but I hope I never have to talk to you guys again about this issue![]()

LOL. Good work Kellnos and thanks for the update. Hope to not have to talk to you again soon as well, lol!
