First of all the problem in short is my dvd drive is not working properly. One day 3 months ago, i was burning a movie, and half way through the burning process, it fails on me. At that moment i didnt think it was too seriouse, but that day forward the drive hasnt worked. I figured out that it is not a problem with the drive so that leaves me with the fact that this computer messed it up. The symptoms are:
1. Inside Dvd Drive Properties/Auto Play, The Action Preformed By windows is stuck on music files, and when i change it to dvd movie, it goes back to music files like its default or somthing.
2. when i insert a dvd movie or any kinda disk, it will either say, Please Insert a Disk into F:, and sometimes it opens the drive but theres no files in it. Also to note autoplay doesnt come up so basicly NOTHING WORKS, just the dvd light flashes for 3 seconds and quits.
3. When Opening Dvd Drive's Property, It Veifies That It Is A CD Drive, NOT DVD Drive.
The things I Have Tried So Far Has Been, ReInstalling The Driver, Can't Rollback Driver; Unpluging The Drive And Changing Cords, Switching The Dvd+RW With My Extra Dvd-Rom Drive And The Exact Thing Happens To It; and finally i have tired updating the atapi.sys file which i heard was "buggy" from sp2, but im not sure if that had to do anything with it, and if you agree then just forget this about me mentioning it. if anybody can help me with this problem i would extremly Appreciate it.
I have also attached a .txt file showing my drive info using nero infotool so that might help

Have you tried uninstalling the drive via the Device Manager & then rebooting in order to trigger a reinstall?
Amazing As It Is, yes i have already done that, i also looked at the google search and nothing in there helps, i think the fact that it shows as a cd drive is only minor, it might help figure why its doing it, but i cant find anything on resolving the main issue of the whole thing not working. keep in mind, it stop working while i was in the middle of burning a movie using nero, and i was away from the computer not using it overtop of the burning.Originally Posted by jephree

& by the way when I go to my DVD/RW properties it is listed as a CD Drive. If I go to the Hardware tab then it is listed correctly in detail.
I cannot locate the nero.zip mentioned in this search:

But it raises the possibility that Nero is the problem. Have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling Nero?
well it sounded like you could have been right and i thought so to but i tried uninstalling then restarting, and it didnt work, then reinstalling and it still didnt work. that autorun idea could have done somthing but it didnt resolve the main issue. i guess this problem is pretty bigOriginally Posted by jephree
Perhaps try the DVD drive alone as the secondary Master.
Unplug the CD drive completely & verify that the DVD jumpers are set to Master.
I Tried out that idea about setting the dvd drive as a secondary master and i took it alittle farther just to give you some more info on what my computer is doing. i have switched around my secondary slave and master with different drives in many combinations. I then recorded all of them and there actions and this is what they were. and the first one is the way i always have it. i used 2 of my old drives which was a normal dvd drive, and a normal cd rom drive.Originally Posted by jephree

Empty(Slave)
5. Cd-Rw(Master) Automatically Loads. Works Fine.
Cd-Rom(Slave) Doesnt Load. And then you can see SMOKE coming out of the drive.
6. Dvd-Rw(Master) Automatically Loads, But Reverts To Secondary Slave for some reason.
Empty(Slave) Becomes The Dvd-Rw, And Leaves Master Empty!
7. Dvd-Rom(Master) Automatically Loads, And Once Again Reverts To Secondary Slave.

8. Dvd-Rw(Master) Automatically Loads, But Changes From Master To Slave Once Again.

It Looks Like Any Dvd Drive I Used Doesnt Want To Work Or Become A Secondary Master. And With This Information I See That My Cd-Rw Always Works. I Dont Know why my cd-rom started smoking up, but that could have been a mistake i made by plugging in the Wrong Cord. but i dont feel like i did that. I heard when you unplug your driver and restart the computer then plug it back in, it should trigger a reinstallation of the driver for that drive but it didnt. im not sure if it was supposed to do that or not. but this i just some more info so you can make it easier to figure out. anyways i appreciate the help.
Just to clarify: you have tried a new IDE cable & you are sure of your jumper settings?
Don't know what to say about the smoker except![]()
Also have you taken all Critical Updates from Windows Update since SP2?
I see this section in the log you posted:
As to the install/uninstall of drives I believe that system has memory as to the drivers. If you just unplug/replug the drive without uninstalling the drive & drivers from within XP then XP will probably carry on as normal. i.e. The drivers are still installed.Installed OS Patches

Just another configuration test if you feel up to it try the DVD as the Primary slave. Not sure what that would indicate but I guess I am leaning to faulting your Secondary Channel.
I am also moving this thread from XP to Hardware hoping someone else there may have ideas.

Im not sure why my hardware is failing on me, but do u think i should get some new Parts. or else is it possible that a changed setting on the computer could have stopped any dvd drive from Working. Could a Hotfix update by microsoft have messed things up?
