    DVD-ROM Dosn't recognise ANY dvd..HELP!

Hi, I have a Hitachi GD-8000 dvd rom, on winXP sp2, pt4,1500 processing speed.
For ages now it will not recognise any dvd at all. That is to say, its not a software issue in that i need to update power dvd etc. The rom doesn't even register a disk in the drive. I put the disk in, press the close button, then the green light comes on. The drive sounds like its about to start turning, but makes a few clicking sounds then the light goes out, and thats that. If I double click on the drive, im told to insert a disc.

It can read cd-roms, and audio cd's, and some of my own ripped vcd's, but NO DVD at all. Actually both dvd-rom drives (one is the cd-writer) do the same.

Any suggestions! Please help, this is most frustrating.

Here is what you need to try:

1 - Go to Hitachi's home page, find the download section, and get the FIRMWARE upgrade for your model of DVD-ROM. Once that is done, or if they dont have a firmware upgrade, then try installing/reinstalling the most recent driver that they have for it. If this does not do it, then:

2 - TOTALLY uninstall the drivers and support software for the DVD-ROM and basically reinstall it, no need to actually take it out of your computer tower. If that does not work then:

3 - Get the biggest baseball bat you can find and beat the living snot out of your computer. Because they are hateful machines.

Hi Thanks for getting back to me. I cant find the latest firmware on hotachis site. I did get firmware elsewhere, but it says i need to start the computer in real dos not ms dos. I dont know how to to this. Im a bit dubious incase it f**ks up my computer. When i try to search for the lastest drivers the computer says i have the latest.

Do you know how to boot xp home edition in real mode? Is this safe?

Well in that case, do yo have the original installation disk?

You can use that to re-install the driver. But you might as well go ahead and totally UNINSTALL the driver first, to be sure.
