Wireless signal issue

Wireless signal issue
I am helping a friend setup a wireless network for her home. The setup at present is as follows:
1 PC connected to the Router (Win 2k)
1 Laptop with appropriate card which picks up the signal with no problem (Win XP)
1 PC which cannot pick up the signal with a wireless USB adaptor (Win 2k)
She does not want to spend any more on the system so solutions such as repeaters and access points are out as they all cost over £30 and I cannot guarantee they will help in anycase.
The current setup has the PC/Router in the farthest room from the others so I have suggested the router is moved to the Laptop room which is half way between the other PCs. If I do this what are the implications in terms of the software installation. Does it have to be re-installed on the laptop given that the Router would then be connected to it rather than the original PC?
I would welcome your thoughts on this and, indeed, any other possible solutions

You have guessed right about the router signal being too weak with the PC that has the USB wireless.
Yes, you would reinstall the router software on the laptop so that the router is configured correctly for the laptop. Do you have a wireless adapter for the PC that currently has the router?

The PC with the router has just that - no wireless USB adaptor. I have a similar system myself - PC attached to a router and a laptop with card. Works fine. Distance I am sure is the problem for my friend's setup. Sounds like moving the router and installing the software on the laptop is the solution?
Many thanks for your help.
