CD Drive Broken!
I am currently using a Compaq Presario 2500 Notebook PC and have physically snapped the flimsy little CD drive tray. I am wondering whether I should have it fixed (Doesn't really look possible). Or whether I should buy a new one and have it installed. If I were to do this where would I get one from? and what sort of priceare they? And also could I fit it myself or would I need to go to a specialist?
Thanks in advance

If all you want/need is a CDROM, they are fairly inexpensive. In Canada, I paid $27.00 (CDN) for a 56X CDROM drive. CD burner drives (CD-RW) and DVD drives are of course more expensive.
Replacement is fairly easy. Power down the system. Remove the cover or the side panels. Locate the back of the CD drive. Using the connector and not the wires, remove (pull) the power cable out. (Four wires, 2 Black, 1 Red, and 1 Yellow.) Pull the wide data cable out. Remove the small sound card cable. Caution; some of these will just pull out, while on some you need to depress a small tab on the connector before it will release. With all three cables disconnected, you should find one to two screws on each side of the drive. Remove these screws and push the drive out through the front of the machine.
Check the jumper on the rear of the removed drive. MA, SL, CS. Set the jumper on the new drive the same. Slide the new drive in through the front. ENSURE it will not hit any components on the motherboard at the back of the drive. (Some drives are longer than others.) If it's clear, set the drive so the front bezel is in line with the rest of the front panel and replace the screws on the sides of the drive. Plug in your sound cable, the data cable (place the red or blue stripe/edge of the cable closest to the power connector), and finally the power cable. Ensure all cables are firmly and squarely seated. Close the system, and power it up.
