My friend is running Windows ME and her PC freezes within 30 seconds of boot-up. Mouse and keyboard both freeze although the desktop is there. I cannot get it to shut down properly and have to go thru scan-disk every time I shut down. What could be causing this and how do I repair it? Thanks for any help.

I'll state up front that I know extremely little about M.E.. However, some standard questions apply;

Was there any new hardware or software installed just prior to the problem occurrence?

If it's a desktop system, has the enclosure venting, power supply vents, CPU-fan/heatsink assemblies been cleaned of dust buildup?

Are all fans running stongly?

There's some form of system restore utility in ME, but I hesitate to suggest that until the basics have been covered.
