What errors do the blue screens give?? if possible, try the file transfer operations a few times, and see if the error is consistent or if varying errors occur, and post the error messages.

the blue screen error is this:

    Disk write error

Unable to write to disk drive D:

Data or files may be lost

    Press any key to continue..

when i press any key to continue my pc tries to go back to the screen i was on but fails and returns to the blue screen ive just typed out..

Sounds like either the cables have come loose or the drive is on its way out. Open up the case and unplug/replug the IDE (both ends) and power cables to the drive. Could be a build up of dirt or something worked its way loose. If you still get the problems then I'd copy everything off it I could and go buy a new disk. You may also find some diagnostic software on the web site of the manufacturer of your hard disk that can interrogate it and tell you if anything is wrong. MAxtor have their MAxblast software for instance and I've used stuff by Hitactchi (formerly IBM) disks.

As Big T said I would open up the case and check the cable connections. And while you have it opened up give a good cleaning with compressed air.
