PC Freezes instantly !!!
I have a PC which originally had Windows 98 running on it for over 2 years. I upgraded it to XP Home sometime last year.
A few weeks ago while using online the PC froze up. This continued...
I originally though it may be the screen but after replacing it with another screen I got the same problem.
The screen still displays the desktop but there is no response when trying to use mouse, keyboard or activate task manager.
I was initially advised to back up everything and re-install XP Home again after an FDISK.
It ran ok for just over 24 hours (no intense use just Windows running with a restart now and again) but eventually froze again.
I have to use the manual restart button on the pc to start windows again. This is a daily occurance, you can get an hour at most before it freezes.
There seems to be no sign of trouble until this point. No dragging or slowness while applications open and no sign of a problem.
The PC works well, everything responds then immediatley, during a stroke of the mouse it will just freeze.
I have checked for viruses, spyware, adware etc.. but as suspected none found.
I've since run System File Checker and replaced a missing file or two but that failed to work.
The display adapter is attached to the AMD board. I have 2 x 256 mb ram in pc, displaying as 512mb.
I haven't tried replacing the hard drive yet could this be my problem????
I'm sure I'm looking at a hardware problem...
can anyone help.....? ......all replies are welcome...thanks.

Sounds like heat. Have you opened the case? Cleaned it out? Checked the fans?
Since the graphics is on-board that pretty much leaves PSU; RAM; or CPU. Or faulty wiring. I would run with the case open & feel the air around looking for Hot Spots. After a freeze feel any wire connections for Hot Spots too.
Here is a RAM test to try:
