How do I calibrate the monitor?

My monitor and printer do not agree on colors, and I think its the monitor's problem, so I am wondering where to go to get a good guide on calibrating the monitor? I have already downloaded the manual for it, and its no help. It doesnt' even use the word calibration in its toc. Ideas? Thanks!

I printed this link out, and it makes more sense. How do contrast and gamma affect color reproduction onscreen?

    Gamma Correction
Corrects the brightness levels in an image. On a computer monitor, a small change in brightness at a low brightness level is not equal to the same change at a high level. Gamma correction compensates for the inequality.

The Contrast changes the amount of shading between areas. You can use it to sharpen or blur an image, to make colors appear more saturated, and make specific areas stand out.
