While trying to install a used hard drive into a hp pavillion it would just shut down when trying to start. it says it could not find a hard drive. any info would be greatly appreaciated.

Please describe in more detail.

You installed this drive as a new Master? Or as a slave? Does it contain an Operating System?

How does the computer shutdown? Where does it say that it could not find a hard drive? Is that the BIOS report? Is that the exact message?

Does the BIOS say that then the computer shuts down?

Also what was happening previously? Why are you changing the hard drive? Or are you just adding an extra?

If the BIOS is not seeing the drive then make sure that the connections are good & that the jumpers are correct.

the drive is a slave w/o an os. if i install it and try to start the pc it says it could not find a hard drive then restarts itself and then it says system halted.not sure if that is the bios. the connections are good and the jumper is set to slave.

So you install this slave & then the BIOS cannot find your Master?

If you remove the slave does your BIOS see the Master?

Yes, thats exactly whats happening.

You need to ensure that your Master drive is not jumpered as 'Cable Select'. 'Cable Select' rarely works!

I've written THREE articles for the tutorials section of this forum specifically to address all of the different issues with detecting hard disks. I'm sure they'll help to walk you through that minefield step by step

slave/master/cable select sounds like most likely cause......mine did very similar when i messed up 2 op drives settigns
