I think my Telephon.ini file is damaged and i need an exe called tapiini.exe to create a new one. However that seems to be missing. I have just bought this computer off ebay so therefore i dont have any install disks.

What does Device manager list as the modem? You can also run the DAL hardware scan to see whats in your PC.

CONEXANT V.92 (ICH3 - AC '97) is the modem.
Im currently trying to find the drivers for the modem from CONEXANT and reinstalling them.

XP Pro should already have the drivers for it (not the specific drivers but generic enough to get you going)

Jephree, I did have a conexant driver, but its specific to my Dell laptop. have you found a general Conexant driver in your travels?

Actually i have the specific drivers for my dell and have dowloaded them from a dell site.
Unfortunately i still get the same message.

What application are you using to use the modem/get on the internet?

I had a similar problem with my Earthlink when I bounced from the onboard modem and a USB modem. Found that the app was using the wrong modem and had to be reinstalled...

Im not sure...
But i dont think thats relevant since when i go to diagnostics (in the properties of the modem) and query the modem, it reports the same old error (port is already in use).

Have you removed the card from its slot and tried a different slot?

Card? Im sorry but im new to laptop slots and whatnot. Anyway i dont think i did either of those.
