My laptop fan is running NON STOP

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My laptop fan is running non stop, even when I use 10% or less CPU and even when I leave it alone for hours at a time. I come back, and it's still running. But the computer isn't even hot. Almost as soon as I turn my laptop on, the fan starts up and never stops. It's overheated a few times recently, resulting in spontaneous shut down of the machine all together. I had to wait a few minutes before I started it back up, and when I did, the fan started up almost immediately. Also, I set it to go into stand by mode on its own after an hour of non-use, and then into hibernation mode after 2 hours of non-use. But a few months ago, it stopped doing it on its own, and now I have to get up in the middle of the night and turn it off myself, for fear that the fan will run itself out. Keep in mind that this is an 8 month old laptop from Gateway.

If it's still under warranty I would send it in.

Do you have heat sensors in the BIOS?

Also you may find some here depending on the hardware:

    Look under Computer | Sensors

My laptop is overheats and shuts off regularly...every other day or so, I'd say. But the fan is running constantly, because it is my understanding that the heat sensors in the bios are not working. But since the fan IS running NON STOP...why would my computer still overheat?

Had that trouble once before I learned to blow it out every 2 or 3 months. All that dust accumulates inside and the fan then heats up and causes other problems. Shut every thing down and remove any attachments near it and give it a good blowjob.

    Hello,suntaxis & Welcome

First i don't care how long you are running a Laptop it's going
to get hot will that's if you go & add say a PC fan not going to
    happen.

now here is one thing i now use for all my laptops & as far
as heat gos i would say i cut it down about 60% i think more
    then that,how you say

i went out & got this CoolPad all you have to do is
buy it plugin to a USB click on & say bye bye heat
i think i got it at Target or Bestbuy can't think of it
right now but the best 10$ i have put out

Another reason you fan can be running constantly is that the fan isnt spinning fast enough to exhaust the heat built up...Fans do die, usually slowly. Do as Jjtime suggested and blow you the vents on the laptop. After that you should be able to feel the amount of air moving out from the fan, if you dont feel any air then the fan is shot and needs to be replaced. Did you buy the Gateway with a regular 90day, 1yr or any extended warranties? If not, you will need to replace the fans after getting the parts from gateway or some local supplier. This is not a job for the new or faint at heart.
