Win XP won't recognise my firewire hd

    Hi ya,

I'am running a laptop with XP pro & a external firewire HD.
This firewire HD connects to my laptop through a PCMCIA card.

I accidently plugged a custom usb-to-6pin firewire cable into my external HD (instead of usually connecting through my PCMCIA card) & now Win XP won't recognise my firewire hd

Have I knackered my HD enclosure?
    Any ideas?

    Regards,
    Kontraband

Have you tried disconnecting the drive & then rebooting without it.

Shut down & reconnect & reboot with it?

Hi ya, Thanks for the reply.

I have just tried rebooting XP without my ext HD, but still no joy, the device powers up ok, but the problem is XP recognising it.
I have purchased a new enclosure, so I'll let you know how I get on with that.

Could it be possible that the custom usb cable has somehow overloaded my HD enclosure, thus making it useless? Do usb ports output a higher voltage than firewire ports?

    Cheers,

I do not know the awnsers to your electrical questions but I will move this to the Hardware Section for perhaps more skilled eyes.

My only other suggestion would be to try a hot unplug/ replug i.e. within XP.
