Exclamation ram causing my pc to crash

    hi there
at the moment i have 2 128mb pc133 ram chips on a gigabyte ga-8smmlp with a geforce ti 4200 working fine. recently i purchased a 512mb pc133 ram chip for the pc and took the other ram out, the problem i have is that as soon as my pc gets into windows (xp) with the new 512mb pc133 ram (when you see the desktop) the system reboots showing a breif blue screen error message or if it doesnt crash as soon as i open an application or game with 3d graphics the system reboots. i have tried the ram in another pc and it works ok.

    Help anybody!

    First off change this setting:

rt. click My Computer then click Properties then Advanced then Startup and Recovery Settings then unclick Automatically restart

Use the RAM to force a shutdown. You will now stop on the blue screen. Copy & post the data. You will then need to power off the computer with the switch.

If a Memory Dump was created then:

Go to start | search (type in) .dmp
Note the location of your latest .dmp file.

    Then:

    1) Download and install the
    Debugging Tools from Microsoft
    2) Download and install this
    debugwiz
    3) Open the Wiz & Browse to, or paste in the path to, your latest .dmp file.
    4) After the Wiz creates a Text document attach it back to this thread.

& just being curious: have you tried the RAM in different slots?

    hi
i will try the debugging tools later and get back to you with all the info.
i have tried putting the ram in another slot and the same thing happens, i left 1 of the 128mb chips in with the 512mb and it worked ok, and never crashed for the 10 minutes i played a game everyhting worked fine, i took the 128mb chip out and the same stuff happens and i need that other ram for another pc, so i tried slowing the clock speed down to 100mhz and it helps a lot, but games crash to my desktop or just restart without a blue error screen.

One is inducating a hardware failure brought on by DirectX 3D called on by GTA-VC. Do you have DirectX 9.0c?
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Check Start/Run/ dxdiag for version. Also check the Display tab for 3D status.

    Also do you have SP2?

Also I quickly see this patch: http://www.megagames.com/news/html/p...v11patch.shtml

The other is basically a nv4_disp.dll issue which could be related to your GeForce drivers & or your chipset SiS drivers & or BIOS.

I also see acceleration issues here which may relate to your clock speed.

    MB-G8SMMLP Gigabyte Ga-8Smmlp ; Sis650Gx, 400Fsb, Ata133, On-Board Ac97 Audio, Vga, Lan ; 2X 168Pin Sdram , 3X Pci, 1X 4Xagp ; M/Atx

Are you sure that the 512RAM is Sdram?

i have got directx 9.0c because i installed batelfield 2 and it installed the latest directx, but my problem started before i installed battlefield 2.
i dont have SP2 at the moment. could that be an issue.
i have this issue that it restarts in any 3d game, vice city was the easiest game to open at the time.
i will download new drivers for all the differant compnents and update my bios but i think i have the latest bios version.
that is the right motherboard you have there.
it does say on the chip that it is 512mb pc133.

But is it SDRAM rather than DDRAM?

what is the differance, DDR (if its the same thing im thinking of) looks differand where you plug it into the motherboard. DDR wont fit onto a SDRAM motherboard i dont think. but it does say 512mb PC133 on it. anything i can try to give you more info?

Sorry... What I was thinking of was the density of the RAM.

Alot of new RAM especially 512MB+ will not work on older boards because of the # of chips on the stick & whether double side or single.

Usually such RAM would not even boot or if mixed with other RAM would not be detected.

Sorry if I was off-base here ... just reminded me of an old problem I had.

Also: I am moving this thread to the Hardware Section where it will probably recieve more experienced readers.

    Hope this helps
