hard disk space problem
hi all,
i have recently formatted and installed windows 2000 sp4 on an old hard disk i have for a friend. The hard disk is 9.50 gig capacity, this is recognised by the machine. The problem i have is that once w2k has been installed my hard disk only has just over a gig of free space left, however the only things on the disk are the standard docs and setting, winnt and program files (empty) folder which total just under 800 mb.
Where has all the free space gone.
Any ideas and help is much appreciatd as this has got me baffled
Many thanks
Paul

Have you looked at the disk in Disk Manager to see what it reports? This will show the total disk (as it's set up in the bios) and all partitions/unallocated space.
Right click My Computer, choose Manage, then Disk Manager (in the lower half of the window).
Post what that reports.

ok,
it reports i have a single partition c: which is the C: partition (drive), that is 9.52 gig in size and has 1.09gig free space left.
thanks for looking at this for me

So C: is using the entire hard disk in one partition? There are no other partitions or any Unallocated Space?
If so, you'll have to see where that space is going via My Computer or Windows Explorer. Open either. Click on Tools, then Folder Options, then View. Right at the top (Files and Folders), set it to show all files, and not hide any files. You'll have to confirm the "Hide protected operating system files {Recommended}" when you uncheck it. (See untitled1.jpg)
Once this is set, you should be able to see all files and folders on the hard disk.
Post back with the best synopsis of the results as you can provide.
