Hi there let me start by staing the basics specs of this dated machine.
AMD Athalon XP200+
512 DDR 2100 RAM
Nvidia GeForce FX 5500
Soundblaster PCI
Window XP Home (SP2)
OK the Problem
Earlier on I changed one of the files in a game I play by mistake. I uninstalled the game and went to reinstall it. PLace the first disk into the DVD drive to start the autoplay instalation process. Nothing happend. Quickly went into My Computer to see what was happening. The DVD drive icon was present, went to open it up, nothing seemed to happen. Clicked on the screen again, and got the message Not Responding. OK I thought, try this in the CD/RW. Got the same thing.
At the moment the disk is in the CD/RW, it has the green light on constantly and you can hear activity.
I have tried several system restores but to no avail.
Is ther anyway to fix this problem or is it going to be a case of buy a new DVD drive and a new DVD/RW?
Hi Lirael,
From what you describe...
it's highly unusual that changing a file in one of you games caused your CD/DVD drive to malfunction. Unless you changed a Windows OS (ie. dll file etc.) file. You might want to re-install Windows using the "repair" function, first. If that gets your drive working.. you may then have to also re-install the CD/DVD drives "driver" programs.
If that doesn't fix it..then...It's probably a co-incidence that your drive decided to malfunction at the same time...and you may have a seperate drive problem. Hope this helps

If you right click the drive & then click Properties what happens?Originally Posted by Lirael
Also check your Device manager:
Start/Run/ devmgmt.msc
Expand (+) DVD/CD-ROM Drives: any yellow "!"?
Also expand (+) IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers
> Secondary IDE Channel: any yellow "!"?
If no errors there the next time you boot check your BIOS Setup to ensure the BIOS is detecting the drives.
One hardware troubleshooter would be to open the case & unplug the Secondary IDE Channel ribbon from the board & reboot without it / the drives.
Shut down | replug | reboot
