My computer's history (including past problems and Upgrades) :
When i got my computer (May last year) it was my dad's old one and it was an AMD Athlon 1800+ processor and still is. When i got it, we managed to overclock the processor speed to run at 1800+ and windows detected the chip as a 2000+ and i bought a 128MB graphics card for my computer which worked fine.
3 or so months ago, i had a problem where my computer's fan would turn on and then off really quickly (i took my tower off of my computer table and onto the floor so i could plug headphones into the sound card) i left it like it overnight, and then for the next day because i had school. When i got home from school my computer wouldn't turn on, the fan would only come on for about half a second and then off again. My dad sais it was performing a power onself test or something and that my motherboard would need replacing. so, i bought a new AMD motherboard and a 512MB stick of RAM that is compatible with my motherboard and it worked perfectly. (windows detected everything fine)
My Processor was running at normal speed and being detected as an AMD 1800+ by windows again (which is what it is), and occasionally when i booted up, my monitor wouldn't turn on with the computer (the computer was on but the monitor was in stand by mode) so i had to restart a couple of times and it would work, then it done it again and it wouldn't work so i turned the power off and plugged my monitor onto the on board video card (32mb) and i took my 128MB Graphicscard out, i also installed the drivers for the onboard video card. My computer worked, but i still had my problem where the monitor would just go into standby mode randomly.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Current problem:
Last week, i had an even worse problem, my computer would boot up but when it got to the black screen that says 'starting windows' and it has a white bar down the bottom to indicate that it is loading, when the loading bar was full, the screen wouldn't change and nothing would happen. I told my dad and we tried several things, the same thing would happen if we tried to boot the computer up from cd, safe mode, or any of the other options. The only thing that would work was when we changed the first boot device to CD-ROM and tried to repair windows, it said it did repair windows, but we still had the same problem, so i decided to buy a new Hard Drive, which i did (last week) and we installed windows on it and set the old hard drive that wouldn't load windows as slave, the old Hard Drive is accessable in windows in 'My computer' and it is sat as 'D' drive.
After that, my initial problem was that my monitor would switch off and back on really quickly, randomly during game play or browsing the internet and sometimes my computer would restart randomly aswell.
I was on my computer yesterday, and it restarted and got to the windows loading screen then a fuzzy line appeared across the 'Loadinbg Windows' screen and it froze, so i restarted it again and loaded windows successfully and played my game and then my computer restarted again while i was playing it so i got annoyed and just turned the computer off.
I went to turn my computer on today, it showed the screen that says my graphics card and froze on it. I restarted and now the computer comes on, the monitor turns on but then without displaying any information other than 'off mode in 5 seconds' (which is what it says when i turn the monitor on without the computer being on), it just goes to standby mode. I turned the power off and tried my dad's spare monitor and it says "the monitor is working, check the cord and PC". So no difference with a different monitor.
I'm convinced that my Power Supply is faulty, i have spent money on the past problems which were recently and i don't want to spend more money on anything that i don't need. So i want to find out/figure out what the problem is so i can fix it.
I think it is deffinately not my:
-Hard Drive
-Motherboard
-RAM
Because all of the above are brand new. I think it could be my graphics card, which is about 6 months old. But my dad suggested that the fact that my monitor is even turning on to standby mode means that the Graphics card is being detected.
I saw another thread where they guy had a similar problem and said that he changed the RAM voltage or something, i'm not sure what this is or does and he didn't say what fixed the problem.
Please help, thanks
My computer is running on:
-Windows 2000 professional (with service pack)
-Albatron 128MB G-Force FX 5200 Graphics card (approx 6 months old)
-two 40GB Hard Drives (one brand new)
-AMD Athlon 1800+ processor
-Winfast K7S 471MG Motherboard (has onboard 32MB graphics card)
-1 stick of 'Team' 512MB DDR RAM

I have also tried the onboard video card with both monitors and they still stay in standby mode.
Have you checked for any stand by options in the BIOS?
Do you have the latest BIOS for your board?
My monitor comes on, but it goes straight to standby mode. I can't access the BIOS, and i'm not sure if i have the latest BIOS, i bought the motheboard like 2 weeks ago max, would the latest BIOS come with it?Originally Posted by jephree

OK... sorry; I was thinking backwards![]()
The monitors seem fine; they are not getting any signal.I went to turn my computer on today, it showed the screen that says my graphics card and froze on it. I restarted and now the computer comes on, the monitor turns on but then without displaying any information other than 'off mode in 5 seconds'
When you try the on-board connection are you removing the AGP card?
Also are you familiar with clearing the CMOS on the motherboard?
Look in the manual or we can look on-line...
I would remove the AGP card; clear the CMOS & try booting from the on-board graphics.
Also verify that you have all the power connections connected to the board.
Again check the manual; there are often several connections besides the main. An ATX; a 12V; etc.
When i try the onboard connection, yes i am removing the AGP card.Originally Posted by jephree
I am not femiliar with clearing the CMOS on the motherboard, but i'm sure my dad is and he gets home in about 2 hours. I'll see if he will help me fix it or not.
I found details for my motherboard and a picture here:

Manual here:

On page 4 is:
You can clear CMOS to restore default system setting. To clear the CMOS, follow
the procedures described below.
1. Turn off the AC power supply and connect pin 1 and 2 together using the jumper
cap .
2. Return the jumper setting to normal (pin2 and 3 together with the jumper cap).
3. Turn the AC power supply back on.
Ok, i just cleared CMOS and turned the computer on (with the AGP Graphics card in and the monitor connected to it) and the monitor still stays in standby mode. Should i try it again with the monitor connected to the onboard video card? if i do this, do i need to clear CMOS again?
Yes: I would clear again & try on-board.
Ok, i cleared CMOS and the monitor is plugged into the onboard video card and i turned the computer on and the screen is on, and i'm in the BIOS, should i change anything in here? or just load windows? and, does this mean My Graphics card is broken/faulty? and should i buy a new one?
