I am having loads of problems with my DVD drives. Both drives can play a CD no problem and upload music to iTunes. But when a software disk, or a DVD is played in them then the PC freezes and has to be reset to recover.

I have disabled auto play and still it freezes trying to read the disk

I have checked everything. I have changed the DVD burner as memorex said they thought it was faulty. My config is shown bellow:

P4 3.2G
Abit IC7 MAX3 MBoard
1G DDR ram
Memorex True 8X Dual format DVD WR
Memorex 16X DVD
NVIDIA PCI 128MB 8X

One thing I thought about was that I havent set the region codes on the drives, That would stop the movies working but I have DVD's with software on them.

Any ide's anyone?

What software have you got installed to play DVD films on? WinDVD? If you have the installation CD for it, it might be worth removing the DVD viewer and then trying to insert a data DVD again. If the computer doesn't freeze, that would suggest a conflict with the software that you were using, which was probably trying to run something (in an AutoPlay kind of way) whenever a DVD was put in.

Incidentally, did you build this PC yourself or buy it from a shop?

Hey, yeah I have the same problem. However, I at least have the advantage of being having a dual boot machine (just in case XP crashes, you know ;-) ). When I boot into windows 2000 I don't have any problems with either of my CD/DVD drives. Even while I'm in XP I can read CDs and DVDs if I wait long enough for windows explorer to recognise that it's there. Only when I burn something with Nero does it freeze my drive completely...

Make of DVD-Rom/RW/R drive
Dvd Playing software
When it failed to work vs when it last worked
If this is a homebrew vs store bought configuration.
