    D and E drives missing....help please!!

    Hi there,

Excuse me if anything I write makes no sense, I am not the most clued up when it comes to computers! I have loaded up my PC, and when going into my computer the D and E drives are missing, only the A and C are left. They are there when the computer first loads, so I was wondering how to get them to come back to my computer?

Any help will be gratefully received!!!!

    Jo

can you actually use your cd dvd drives although they are not being reconised

are they old, if so one could have gone wrong and as they are on the same ide cable( that is how they are attached to the motherboard) that could show that they are missing

please get back to me for further help

    hope this helps

Just to clarify: the D & E drives are both DVD or CD drives?

Both are seen in the BIOS but not in Windows?

    Both were previously working OK?

Did you unplug & replug the ribbon cable into the motherboard?

Check the Device Manager: RT click My Computer then click Manage then Device Manager or go to start/run/ devmgmt.msc for any "!"

    Look under DVD/CD-ROM drives
    press + to expand

    as well as:

    IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers +
    Secondary IDE Channel

Apologies for the lateness of my reply. All of your assistance is greatly appreciated. Ok, jephree, One is a CD drive, and one is a DVD drive. No, I haven't taken the ribbon cable out, should I?

Under device manager, there is a tab that says Hard disk controllers, and when I expand it it says primary IDE controller (single fifo) and secondary IDE contoller (single fifo), and both of these have a "!" next to them.

    Does that help?

    The ! indicates a problem.

Right click the controller line & choose Properties.
See if it gives you any info.
If nothing special try Updating Drivers.
    Also can try Troubleshooting.

Do you have a floppy/CD with the controller/driver files for your motherboard? If so, reinstall them.

If you don't, open Device Manager, remove/uninstall everything (three entries) under the Hard disk controllers section. Reboot (shutdown/restart) your system and let windows find them, and install the MS drivers and system files. (You'll need your O/S CD for the "new" files.) Once the devices are reinstalled, open DM again and drill down through Hard disk controllers to the Bus Master PCI IDE Controller. Highlight it and click Properties. Click settings. Select Both channels instead of Default.

    Let us know your results.
