DVD/rom connection problem
G'day , I have tried to install a dvdrom tonight and although the pc starts it does not get past the warm up screen.ie the blue dots travelling across the screen. It goes so far and then, nothing. My cd.rw is configured as the secondry master and the new dvd/rom as secondry slave. Both the cdrw and dvdrom appear to work physically. The pc was working fine before I attempted the changeover, with a cd rom and cdrw. Thanks for your help Terry

G'day. I recently installed a dvd/rom and now the pc wont open windows. It gets the start up screen after a warning that windows did not start correctly etc. I then choose to start windows normally but it does not go past the blu bars moving acroo the screen(they just stop). The cdrw is set to master and the dvd rom to slave.....any ideas????. Terryt

So even the old working setup is no longer working?
Did you try from Safe Mode options (F8 after BIOS/Logo before XP) choose:
Start last known good configuration...
Also check the connections to the drives (including hard drive).
Graphics card; RAM; anything that could have gotten bumped.
If still no go remove both optical drives & just boot with the hard drive to see.

G'day spud, The thing just will not work,I have taken it off and refitted the cdrom and everything is normal again. The pc in question has a40gb hdd 533mh proc. and 200mb ram. Its about 4-5 years old. I am not in the habit of giving up but it was the wifes pc and I could see trouble coming lol. I would still appreciate any thoughts on this problem though. Terry

You need to determine whether the fault is with:
a) The DVDROM drive
b) The secondary IDE cable
c) The jumper settings
d) The BIOS configuration
e) A driver
f) None of the above
'None of the above' is the easiest thing to check for first of all. Open your system case and simply unplug the secondary IDE ribbon cable from the motherboard. Switch on the PC. Does it boot?
What version of Windows are you on?

is your bios recognising the drive?

i attempted to install a dvd drive on an old pc n couldnt get it to work.....i found out eventually that the psu was not powerful enough......try a different psu if you have one
check your bios to see if its recognising it

Thanks for that. I have now removed the dvdrom(mainly because the missus was getting impatient).I dont like giving up and I would like to know why it didn't work. The system is xp pro the pc is about 4-5 years old with 533 cpu and 200mb ram. I did dis the ide cable and it still didn't boot into windows.Any other conflicts or bios problems I'm not sufficiantly knowledgeable to detect, but your advice would be appreciated, I'm always keen to learn. Thanks Terry
