hi all!
i have a cable broadband service with telwest (blueyonder) and i have a cable modem (motorola surfboard sb5100)
everything works fine except...now that i am going to being online gaming (ps2)...i need my internet connection to be through ethernet cable whereas my modem only allows me to connect through usb....i have tried a few things (motorola website, re-installing...but there is no connectivity through the ethernet cable) i have also replaced the cable which i have had no luck with doing......the cable is straight through NOT xover.
do any of you guys have any ideas? im open to any suggestions!! if you haven't pls feel free to suggest a new modem which will work as desired....im lookin to spend £40 at most!

Couple of questions:
Is your NIC functional? Do have a way of testing the NIC so that you are sure its working?
What OS are you using?
-
its xp home (bundled with an emachines)
the thought it could be nic didnt even hit me.....it MITE b......i aint got a way to test it though
.......(although im not sure if it is because its not a nic so to speak because its actually built onto the mobo)
its a lan port...that is the same isn't it
i dnt have anyway of testing it...what do you think i should do?
thanks for the help and please keep the ideas coming!!

First, go to you System properties and then Device Manager. Look for Network Adapters.
If its not listed then either the NIC is disabled in BIOS on your machine or you dont really have one (Seen some where the port was there but no chip!)
If you have a yellow ! next to the adapter, that means either the drivers are wrong or the device has a hardware problem.
Let us know when you can.

under network adapters i have "Motorola Sufboard...." and "Realtek RTL8139/810x family fast ethernet NIC"
sop it is real....ive tried updating drivers but it says its got best available.
when a cable is plugged in it lights up if thats any help?
thanks for the help....got any other ideas?

Realtek is atleast stable. The NIC lights on the back of the MB are on when you plug the cable in? If so that show a link. Remove the Motorola listing from the Network adapters and see if you can connect then. The Two NIC drivers may be causing a conflict (It sees the Motorola but only knows to look at the USB) I had an old Cable modem that had both USB and Enet, had to remove the USB based driver so that the Enet could work. We can try that here and see if that gets us alittle farther.

i disabled the motorola and lost all conectivity
is there a way to disable/cancel/del the usb driver individually?
what do you think i should do now?
thanks for the help again btw

through testing ive found out that my modem is on usb uni host controller 24C2

could you plug your modem into your usb port and your ps2 network adaptor in an ethernet port on your pc (if you have one) would this work?
