    mouse and keyboard freeze

    Windows XP Home SP2

Brand new build w/MSI 865PE NEO3 motherboard P4 3.0 1 Gig run in dual mode, Antec Sonata case w/380 watt PSU. 80GB Maxtor master & 120GB WD slave HDDs. Sony DRU530 DVD master and Pioneer CDRW slave.

Everything works fine except for this problem:
Almost every time when a disk is inserted in either optical drive and it spins up, the mouse (optical wired) and keyboard (PS2) freeze completely. I have to turn off the system via the switch and reboot, then it's ok again, until I try to use either optical drive.

I've tryed 2 different optical and 1 new ball mouse (all work on other machines), USB & PS2 types. No change. Have the latest drivers installed. Uninstalled and let the system find them again. I have the side off the case and a fan blowing to keep it cool while I'm working on it, so heat is not an issue.

Drives are properly recognized in BIOS. I disconnected 1 drive, re-jumpered them to cable select and back again, checked BIOS settings, etc., etc. No change.

Checked this site for possible answers, but no solution found. Googled, came up dry.

Any thoughts as to what to try next??

    As a test:

Insert a disk while holding down the Shift key.
This stops auto start of disk.
Hold till the drive light goes out. Maybe 20 seconds or so.

Do you still get the same problems?

If no problem can you initiate the CD from My Computer?

If this seems to resolve your problem you can turn off Auto Play by right clicking your Optical Drive then Properties then Auto Start & choose Take No Action.

Another point of call could be the firmware. Have a look on www.rcp1.org for the latest updates.

p.s. Just in case they usually have the original firmware saved as the 1st on or the lowest verison number.

Thanks for the input. After a lot of thought and dead ends:

I uninstalled InCD (Nero) and so far (8 various CD & DVDs) the problem has not re-occurred. Might be a bad install or simply a software conflict. May have to go back to Roxio (Sony packaged software) although I much prefer Nero and was able to use it on another computer with the same drives.

    Keeping my fingers crossed...
