Does my laptop have USB 2? If not, how can I upgrade?

Hello, I'm a bit hopeless with computers, and I wasn't sure if my laptop has USB 2 ports. I'm buying an MP3 player that only uses USB 2 (not firewire). If my laptop only has USB 1, how can I easily and cheaply upgrade it to USB 2? Can I even do this? Here is my laptop make, model and spec (purchased in August 2002):

    Titanium 850 Laptop:-
    P4 Model = S850-2.2-15-CMB
    £1699 inc VAT
    Pentium 4 - 2.2GHz CPU
    512mb RAM Memory
    40gb Hard Disk Drive
    'Fujitsu silent Drive'
    15

I would say you have USB2. What OS do you have?

Both the Manufacture date and the Processor show its of the age for USB2. I am having a little bit of trouble finding a Titanium 850 though...

    Hiya,

Thanks for replying. Its XP pro. I've also had a lot of trouble finding the particular make and model on the net - I bought it from a small local computer shop, it's full title being "Titanium 850 Laptop, P4 Model = S850-2.2-15-CMB"

Its probably a stupid question, but how can I tell if it's USB 2? Is there a way to tell through the control panel?

    Thanks for your help!

Right-click on My Computer, select Properties, then the Hardware tab, then Device Manager (if that's not the right sequence for Windows XP, you should be able to find it somewhere in Control Panel). Once you're in Control Panel, expand the folder of 'Universal Serial Bus Controllers'. If you have one or more entries under there listed as a 'USB 2.0 root hub', then you've got USB v2.

If you don't have USB 2.0, I can supply you with a brand new USB 2.0 card that fits into a PCMCIA slot in the side of your laptop (almost all laptops have them but you should check yours). This gives you two USB 2.0 ports. I believe that this is the only way to get USB 2.0 onto a laptop that only has USB 1.1 ports. Cost would be about trade price - £25.00 plus £2.95 postage within the UK.

What OS are you Using DJ? I know my desktops have USB2 and the dev manager does not list a USB2.0 but a USB Enhanced...Even my Dell I8200 (which also has USB2) only shows USB Enhanced. I wish it would show plainly USB1.1 or USB2.0 in the CP.

Thanks for the answer though! That was what I was missing in trying to ID the two.

I've seen this today on my Windows 2000 custom built PC at home and also on a new Windows XP Dell laptop that I've been setting up at the office. Whether it displays 'USB 2.0' or 'USB Enhanced' might depend on the chipset drivers on the motherboard.
