i have a cd writer but no software for it. can i download one of the free writer software packages will it recognise the cd? thanks for your help

Once the CD-RW drive and disc is detected by Windows, then Windows can use its own inbuilt CD-RW function.

If you want a decent CD-RW software package I recomend Nero, you'll have to pay for it, but its worth the money.

Note that this ONLY applies to Windows XP. No other versions of Windows were released with built-in CD writing capabilities.

Nero is one of the 2 most popular packages. The other is Adaptec Easy CD Creator, which I personally prefer.

I also recommend Nero. I believe you can download trial versions for multiple programs for 30 days. Don't spend hard earned money on anything you might not like.
