URGENT! Dinosaur Won’t Power-Up
IBM PC 6275-57U
OS Original Configuration WIN98, Upgrade to WIN2000 Pro
Trying to recover from the Blue Screen of Death, to do a total Data Recovery (if possible), I was told we need to work from the original PC & configuration vs. running the HD as a slave. We can see the Outlook Express program but we cannot see the files (as many as 5,000 emails.)
When plugged in, the PC receives power but is not powering-up. Although all think I’m nuts, I’ve had an intermittent problem with the power cord for over a year. If it gets moved the same problem occurs with the power, on but not powered-up. I move the cord and all is good.
We’ve put on another power cord. Power, no power-up.
Feedback received…
-It’s the power supply.
-It can’t be the power supply is it has power.
-Possibly a short in the power supply?
-Possibly a crack in the system board.
-or- Through it off the roof!
Anyways, the one who has the computer now, wants an answer from me today or he will not do any more than save the data we can see now.
Suggestions?
-
The flakey power supply/cord should be eliminated from the problem. It's kind of senseless to try to procede to correct things with the power potentially going at any time. Can you get/borrow another P.S. and cord to enable working on things?
-
Thank you.
We used a different power cord from a computer w/o problems and... nothing.
From what I've explained does it sound like that it is the power supply and "only" the power supply?
-
"...another P.S. and cord.."
Are you sure power is getting to the motherboard? (Why I suggested swapping out the PS and cord.)
Is it an AT or ATX machine? If AT it could also be the main power switch on the front panel. If ATX, the leads could be momentarily shorted to see if the motherboard reacts. Plus there's usually a small red or green LED on the motherboard which lights when power to the (ATX) board is present.
Are all connections tight?
Basic troubleshooting techniques should be used to find the failed item. ie; Where is the power lost, at the PS, at the board, etc.
The more information you provide helps matters along. What have you tried and what were the results, etc.

>Is it an AT or ATX machine?<
I don't know what that is. Am I dumb here?
Another Tech said if the IBM created the problem and we were able to power up and attempted recovery from there, all data may be lost anyway. he said it should be done from another computer in good shape. The one who has my computer said he needs to do recovery from the computer it all originated from.
I am very confused from information overload at this point. What else can i give you to help you help me?
BTW: The bigger problem here is the one who has the computer said he would repair it the night I brought it to him. It is now 4-days later and just sitting there. Last night he promised tonight, isn't home and hasn't called.
My bigger problem is not the so called "crash" itself but that I have a huge court case that the docs I need to retrieve and the ability to type on my computer, I have to get the docs a compose a declaration to my attorney last Friday. The court doesn't wait. I know more than you need to know.
Thanks!

Here is the link to Troubleshoot the PC from IBM:

This is an ATX power supply. However, you say that using a different power cord it wont boot up at all, just power up, with the original power cord it has to be in a set fashion before it will complete boot. This implies a broken connector in the power supply. If you can get a spare powersupply or your friend has a spare 200w ATX power supply, you should be able to boot this computer up.

If you manage to get the hard drive into another PC there are various ways to get the data.
Method 1
Put the hard drive in as the master and use a program called ERD Command 2002 - http://www.winternals.com/products/r...02.asp?pid=erd
This will give you a nice cuddly windows GUI to play with and also allow you to access the data.
Method 2
Put the hard drive in as the slave and use a program called file scavenger - http://www.quetek.com/prod02.htm
This program can find files that have even been deleted from your system
