Modem on Com 3 No Com 3 onDevice manager

I have installed a 56k modem with drivers from manufacturer. All is well and diagnostics ok Modem does not detect dial tone which is present on the line.
Modem set to com 3 on install (I cant remember if I had a choice) but device manager only displays com 1 & 2, no com 3.
com 1 is free. how can eithe r the modem port be changed or Com 3 activated or is this all bull**** and I should be doing something else??

    regards

If the modem is PnP (Plug n Play), and the drivers are correct, it may provide an option to change Comm ports. If not, Comm 3 can usually be enabled in the bios. Also, some PnP modems still have jumpers on them which can be "hard set". The bios setting for Comm 3 will probably clear up the problem.

    Thanks Dan,
You were right! The PNC/PCI was set to manual and the onboard Serial port to Auto. Serial port 2 set to Disable!
    Com 3 set to 3F8/IRQ4
    and 2 set to 2E8/IRQ
Modem removed from device manager and system rebooted.
ME picked up the modem on startup now fully and correctly functioning.

Device manager is now showing com 1 and com 4 whilst the modem is set to com3, how come and why com 4? any ideas

    Thanks again

My system (98SE, Device Manager) shows Comm ports 1, 2, & 3 (mine are all "empty" - no devices attached), and the modem properties shows the (PCI PnP) modem occupying Comm4.

Thus your system (probably) isn't showing Comm3 as it's (now) under the modem properties. The Comm1 and Comm4 may be what it's seeing as "currently unoccupied" available ports. Do you have anything attached to Comm2?

    Dan,

Nothing to my knowledge, and nothing is showing in the device manager.

Are you familiar with an "idiots guide " to serial ports tand their settings that I could usefully read. As I don't understand the basics of the allocation of either the memory or the IRQs its all a bit of a mystery to me....
